Chief Pharmacy Officer/Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs Reporting jointly to the Chief Operating Officer of Pharmacy at University of Michigan Health and to the College of Pharmacy Dean, the Chief Pharmacy Officer (CPO) will provide strategic direction, leadership and management of the Department of Pharmacy Services, leading the provision of contemporary pharmacy services to inpatients and outpatients through highly reliable, safe and efficient medication use systems, direct patient care services, collaboration with other healthcare providers, and education of health science school students and other trainees across the continuum of care. The scope of the CPO role includes all academic medical center pharmacy care, along with the pharmacy care provided in the regional health system portfolio (Sparrow, UM Health West, future expansions) serving as a corporate and centralized suite of pharmacy operations to meet the needs of patients and the communities we serve statewide. The CPO will also serve as a faculty member and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs in the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy. The Associate Dean is responsible for students and residents who have educational experiences within the health system and, in partnership with the Department Chair of Clinical Pharmacy, for managing the clinical faculty who practice within the University of Michigan Health, and for working closely with the Dean and Department Chair and health system administrators to balance and integrate the missions of UMH and the College of Pharmacy. Job Summary Reporting jointly to the Chief Operating Officer of Pharmacy at University of Michigan Health and to the College of Pharmacy Dean, the Chief Pharmacy Officer (CPO) will provide strategic direction, leadership and management of the Department of Pharmacy Services, leading the provision of contemporary pharmacy services to inpatients and outpatients through highly reliable, safe and efficient medication use systems, direct patient care services, collaboration with other healthcare providers, and education of health science school students and other trainees across the continuum of care. The Associate Dean is responsible for students and residents who have educational experiences within the health system and, in partnership with the Department Chair of Clinical Pharmacy, for managing the clinical faculty who practice within the University of Michigan Health, and for working closely with the Dean and Department Chair and health system administrators to balance and integrate the missions of UMH and the College of Pharmacy. Responsibilities* Direct Health System Pharmacy Services across the statewide system of care. Develop and implement a strategic vision for pharmacy services that aligns with our organizational strategy. Oversee the pharmaceutical contracting, procurement, receiving, security, inventory control and distribution processes. Develop an expense budget of approximately $1 billion and monitor financial performance. Recruit, retain and develop a highly skilled professional staff and ensure staffing meets patient care needs. The pharmacy department is staffed by approximately 800 full-time-equivalents comprised of approximately 1,000 full-time, part-time, and temporary employees. Oversee the design, implementation and management of a safe and effective medication-use system. Ensure that pharmacists are positioned to improve the quality and safety of medication use throughout the health system. Ensure information systems maximize the safety and efficiency of pharmacy services. Serve as a senior advisor and member of the administrative team at the College and be involved in the strategic planning process. Set and achieve targets to drive continuous assessment and improvement in the quality of care and services provided. Integrate the missions of UMH and the College of Pharmacy and manage the clinical faculty, students and residents. Collaborate and partner with the medical and nursing staffs in a multidisciplinary manner. Collaborate with HomeMed on home infusion services. Collaborate with the UM Office of Staff Benefits on the prescription drug benefit program. Assure compliance with Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) in Health System units. Stay clinically relevant and well-versed in the latest drugs. Participate actively in local, state and national professional associations. Ensure compliance with all local, state and national regulatory bodies. Oversee and ensure systems for the safe and secure storage and distribution of controlled substances. Required Qualifications* Education: Doctor of Pharmacy or Master of Science degree required; completion of residency in health system pharmacy administration or equivalent experience. Ideally eligible for the academic rank of Professor (with or without tenure depending on the applicant's experience level). Experience: The successful candidate will be an innovative, collaborative and strategic senior pharmacy leader with a demonstrated track record of developing and implementing a strategic vision for pharmacy services. S/he will have minimally ten years of progressively responsible senior health-system pharmacy leadership in an academic medical center or complex health system; involvement in the training of pharmacy students and residents and a substantial record of scholarship and teaching; considerable experience managing large budgets and human resources; extensive knowledge of medication safety procedures and current trends in contemporary pharmacy service provision; and a demonstrated expertise to direct the pharmaceutical supply chain and clinical therapeutics. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Licensure/Certification: Current license to practice as a Pharmacist in the State of Michigan. Effective Communication and Mentoring Skills. Demonstrated success leading projects and initiatives to improve efficiency, quality, safety and service levels in a complex healthcare environment. Extensive knowledge of medication safety procedures and current trends in contemporary pharmacy service provision. Ability to recruit and retain highly skilled professional staff. Strong knowledge of pharmacy informatics and technology within pharmacy and health systems. Knowledgeable about the pharmaceutical supply chain, clinical therapeutics, human resources management, and budget management. Ability to develop and implement a strategic vision for pharmacy services. Proven leadership skills in relationship to motivating and empowering staff. Track record of collaboration and effective partnerships with physicians, nurses, hospital administrators and others. Experience managing large budgets. Success in developing and enhancing the skills of leadership and professional staff. Ability to unify disparate operations and interests through establishment of a common vision and best practices. Leadership in the profession and academic experience appropriate to interact with senior faculty. Creative and visionary leader with unquestioned integrity and moral character.
