The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for leading mechanical efforts to investigation customer problems to drive to root cause, improve existing system designs and processes, and develop/design/document new products. This role will offer the opportunity for engineers to refine their technical knowledge on a variety of tools for design, simulation, reliability, and tolerance analysis as well improve their ability to lead projects across new production development efforts.

This position is part of the Mechanical Engineering team under the R&D Systems Engineering organization and will be located in Sunnyvale, California (Hybrid). At Cepheid, our vision is to be the leading provider of seamlessly connected diagnostic solutions.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Define, design, test, develop, and validate new products. Continuously document progress during define, design, validation, and verification phase, and prepare final reports.
  • Maintain and/or improve existing products to achieve better quality and/or cost reductions. Coordinate with vendors to optimize Design for Manufacturability (DFM).
  • Write and release Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) for engineering drawings and Bills of Material (BOMs)
  • Independently research solutions, fix and resolve sophisticated engineering issues. Analyzes data, conducts experimental tests and evaluates results.
  • Present technical data, including issues, risks, and opportunities to multi-functional audiences, including New Product Introduction Engineering, Systems Engineering, Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality, Purchasing, Regulatory, Customer Care, and Manufacturing as well as other multi-functional teams.

The essential requirements of the job include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with 8+ years of experience OR Master’s degree in ME with 6+ years of experience.
  • 5+ years of responsibilities in developing new products, preferably in a regulated environment including diagnostics, medical device, life sciences, or biotechnology industries.
  • Proficient in SolidWorks with robust design skills. Fluency in ASME Y14.5 GD&T and stack-up tolerance analysis tools. 
  • Working understanding of injection molding design and tool qualification processes.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of various manufacturing methods (rapid prototyping, hard tooling, machining, sheet metal, thermo-forming, etc).

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:

  • Familiarity with CFD and FEA simulation tools, preferably Ansys.
  • Defining, verifying, and documenting engineering requirement specfications (ERS).  Writing test protocols, navigating dFMEAs, and releasing reports. 
  • Leading engineering projects, managing small cross-functional teams, and driving action through project management skills.

The salary range for this role is $130K-$150K per year.  This is the range that we in good faith believe is the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.

This job is also eligible for bonus/incentive pay.
