Health & Safety Specialist, Senior

As our Senior Health & Safety Specialist, you will plan, direct, and implement safety programs in the Mill, Mine, Surface Maintenance and Surface Operations in an underground hard rock mining operation to keep our production going and our profitability up. Every day you will work at a mine on a remote island about 18 miles outside of Juneau, Alaska. You’ll start every day organizing, scheduling, and prioritizing work activities to promote a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment. You will be called upon to work cooperatively with others as part of a team, and encourage collaboration, trust and openness among employees. To thrive in this role, you will conduct investigation of accidents, incidents and injuries and assist front line leaders and employees in establishing root cause and implementing appropriate corrective actions. We’re on a remote island, you must know how to work independently, identify, and resolve problems in a timely manner.
About Us
The Greens Creek Mine, located on Admiralty Island 18 miles south of Juneau, is an underground polymetallic mine operating since 1989, employing approximately 450 people. The mine is owned and operated by Hecla Mining Company, headquartered in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Established in 1891, Hecla has a rich history as a distinguished and respected precious metals producer. Here’s what you can expect in this role:
Training first. Every hire is provided MSHA training in the first 4 days on the job. We also provide department-level training on not just what to do, but safety, as well.
Apply your leadership skills in conducting MSHA training, including 40-hour Newly Employed Inexperienced Miner, Experienced Miner, Annual Refresher Training, and Site Specific Hazard Awareness Training.
You will assist with or conduct health and industrial hygiene surveys/sampling and implement or recommend control measures to minimize/eliminate exposures.
You will implement and review safety & health policies and procedures in compliance with Greens Creek and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) rules and regulations.
Safety is important. Every piece of equipment and each work area must be inspected before work starts. You will promote and personally observe safety procedures.

We have a two-part interview process. First, the hiring manager will reach out to you to set up a phone or video interview to get to know you and your skillset a little better. Then, if you are selected to continue in the interview process, we will arrange a trip for you to come to Juneau and visit the mine site. You will interview with us in-person to ensure you are a fit for us, and we are a fit for you.
