Juneau, Alaska, United States South East Alaska Regional Health Consortium Full time

Compensation:
$53.45

South East Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) is dedicated to enhancing the health and well-being of the Southeast Alaska community. We believe our workforce is our greatest asset, and we prioritize their growth and development through professional advancement opportunities.

Joining SEARHC means embarking on a rewarding career path, not just a job. We provide a comprehensive benefits package, including retirement plans, paid time off, parental leave, health, dental, and vision insurance, life coverage, and both short and long-term disability benefits.

This role is situated within the Rehabilitation Services Department, focusing primarily on conducting comprehensive Occupational Therapy (OT) assessments and interventions that significantly influence patients' functional capabilities. The Rehabilitative Therapy Specialist operates with professionalism, upholding confidentiality, and embodies the principles outlined in the Seven Standards for Service Excellence as per SEARHC's Human Resources Manual. Services are delivered in accordance with hospital and Home Health protocols, licensure mandates, regulatory standards, and the national guidelines established by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).

Occupational Therapists are accountable for patient evaluations, developing care plans, and implementing therapeutic strategies aimed at enhancing the quality of life and independence of individuals across various age groups and health conditions. The clinic is responsible for informing clinical teams about OT-related decisions while considering input from other healthcare providers. As patients are treated, recommendations regarding their independence and rehabilitation needs may be made, influencing care services and future treatment plans. The incumbent is also expected to contribute to program development, quality improvement, problem-solving, and productivity enhancement in a collaborative interdisciplinary manner. Proper documentation and processing of interventions are essential for continuity of care and reimbursement.

This position may necessitate occasional travel to provide services outside of the primary facility. The role may involve working in confined spaces, at a fast pace, with diverse individuals, including those with challenging personalities; thus, sound judgment, tact, and interpersonal skills are crucial for fostering positive relationships with patients and colleagues. Potential risks are inherent in this role, including exposure to infectious agents; therefore, adherence to safety protocols and the use of protective equipment is essential. The job may require lifting heavy objects, up to 50 pounds, and engaging in physically demanding activities; thus, good body mechanics and sound judgment are necessary. Services may be rendered in various environments, including inpatient, outpatient, community events, home visits, and remote locations. Travel to isolated areas by boat or plane may be required, potentially in adverse weather conditions. This position is subject to the Indian Child Protection Act (ICPA).
Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough assessments, perform evaluations, identify therapy diagnoses, develop treatment plans with specific goals, and implement Occupational Therapy services for patients. Act as the primary therapy provider, modifying care plans based on patient responses to optimize outcomes. Participate in care conferences and maintain communication with referring providers and other rehabilitation professionals to discuss patient status and needs. Collaborate with team members to ensure appropriate medical equipment is arranged and care plans are established prior to patient discharge. Document patient encounters, including findings, treatment plans, and recommendations, in accordance with hospital policies. Provide timely services following receipt of referrals, catering to both inpatient and outpatient populations. Supervise support staff, students, or interns as necessary. Foster a partnership among healthcare providers, patients, and their families. Develop and implement patient education and therapy programs tailored to individual and family needs. Provide home exercise programs to help patients achieve their rehabilitation goals. Advise patients and families on techniques, assistive devices, and environmental modifications to enhance independence and quality of life in daily activities. Evaluate the need for durable medical equipment based on patient requirements. Ensure home programs are clear and understood by patients or caregivers through feedback and demonstration.
  • Deliver therapy services outside the primary facility in collaboration with SEARHC Home Health and Community Health Services programs, potentially at various locations such as community clinics, senior centers, and health fairs. This may involve project participation or health promotion initiatives. Utilize video conferencing for training, patient interactions, and administrative tasks with off-site locations. Conduct home visits to assess patients' living conditions, safety, functional levels, and the need for environmental modifications, implementing therapy plans in their home settings. Workplace visits may involve evaluating patients' techniques and environments to optimize function for injured or impaired workers. Community-based interventions assist patients in enhancing their functionality in public settings.
  • Provide education to staff on OT-related topics and instruct patients and families on therapeutic exercises, activities, and equipment. Assist in departmental management and committee duties as needed. Offer therapy consultations, presentations, and in-service training to medical staff and other healthcare professionals regarding therapy services. Stay current with therapy procedures and techniques through participation in clinical education and in-service training. Continuing education funds are available for departmental enhancement. Adhere to the regulatory and practice standards set by the AOTA and comply with SEARHC's confidentiality and quality assurance standards, engaging in Service Quality Management functions.
  • Support senior staff with administrative tasks, clinic operations, and specialty research as appropriate. Utilize the hospital's computer system to access patient information and stay informed about hospital directives, ensuring efficient information flow. Provide summaries of results and metrics as required by management. Assist in acquiring and fitting durable medical equipment based on patient needs. Maintain adequate supply levels and cleanliness in clinical areas.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Master's or Doctorate degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited program or a Bachelor's degree from an OATA-approved program with two years of relevant experience demonstrating mastery of the knowledge typically covered in a Master's program.
  • Licensed Occupational Therapist.
  • Certification from the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT).
  • Basic Life Support Certification.
  • Valid Alaska Driver's License.
Experience:
  • Minimum of two years of clinical experience providing occupational therapy across all age groups.
  • Preferred experience with CVA, pediatric populations, autoimmune disorders, and individuals with physical disabilities.
  • Preferred experience in outpatient orthopedics and hand therapy, including splinting and custom orthosis fabrication.
Knowledge:
  • Understanding of the physiology of musculoskeletal, sensory, cognitive, and visual perceptual systems to select and administer appropriate assessments and treatments.
  • Familiarity with various techniques for conducting assessments, evaluations, treatment planning, and interventions for patients with functional deficits.
  • Knowledge of regulations and practice standards related to OT, including billing mechanisms for patient services and equipment.
Skills:
  • Expertise in assessing and treating deficits in performance skills (musculoskeletal, sensory, cognitive, visual perceptual, emotional).
  • Ability to assess occupational function deficits and design interventions collaboratively with patients and families to enhance independence and quality of life.
  • Proficiency in assessing patients' needs for assistive devices and durable medical equipment, advising on modifications to optimize safety and participation.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including effective documentation of progress notes and reports, and public speaking.
  • Proficient in utilizing information technology and various software applications.
Abilities:
  • Effective communication with patients, families, and community members, translating complex OT concepts into understandable language.
  • Deliver treatment techniques safely while promoting patient mobility and therapeutic progress.
  • Exercise sound judgment in patient care, workplace safety, and employee relations.
