Position Overview:
The Environmental Chemistry Specialist will deliver expert technical support in environmental chemistry for a variety of remediation and monitoring initiatives.
This role requires a comprehensive understanding of the behavior and movement of organic and inorganic substances within environmental contexts to facilitate project planning, field operations, and reporting.
The Specialist may also serve as a Project Chemist, overseeing the development of sampling and analysis strategies, quality assurance project plans, laboratory selection, conducting field assessments, collecting analytical samples, managing data quality at the project level, and evaluating the usability of data.
In this capacity, the Specialist will juggle multiple projects and clients simultaneously, necessitating exceptional communication abilities.
It is crucial for the Specialist to prioritize effectively, take ownership of tasks, work productively, and maintain a high standard of quality in a fast-paced environment.
Compensation:The salary range for this position is $55,894-$124,995/year; please note this is a tiered position.
Key Responsibilities:
(including but not limited to)
1. Conduct analytical data reviews in the laboratory (Levels II, III, and Senior)
2. Analyze and interpret chromatograms
3. Develop Sampling and Analysis Plans, Quality Assurance Project Plans, Data Quality Objectives, and Data Quality Reports in compliance with federal and state regulations as directed by project management
4. Liaise with environmental laboratories, assess compliance with contract stipulations, and implement corrective action monitoring plans
5. Supervise site investigations and assessments in accordance with regulatory guidelines
6. Adhere to project schedules and financial targets as outlined by management
7. Manage time and resources effectively to meet project objectives
8. Stay updated on relevant scientific literature and documentation
9. Enhance the company’s reputation by taking ownership of team performance and adding value to assigned tasks
10. Provide scientific and technical guidance to project staff preparing documentation
11. Review and ensure compliance of proposals with environmental technical standards and regulations
12. Create visual representations of data samples to summarize environmental relevance
13. Demonstrate data management skills by entering chemical data into various databases.
14. Identify suitable analytical methods for on-site investigations.
15. Uphold safety standards and quality requirements

- Manage projects involving site characterization and long-term monitoring
- Fieldwork may comprise 10% - 25% of time, potentially in remote areas
Minimum Qualifications:
All levels:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, or a related field
- Current 40-Hour HAZWOPER certification
- Valid Driver's License with a clean driving record
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and database management
- Strong communication skills for conveying technical information
Level - I:
- 0 to 3 years of relevant experience; advanced degrees may substitute for experience
Level - II:
- 3 to 5 years of relevant experience; advanced degrees may substitute for experience
Level - III:
- 5 to 7 years of relevant experience; advanced degrees may substitute for experience
Level - Senior:
- 8 or more years of relevant experience; advanced degrees may substitute for experience
- Previous experience in staff management
Preferred Qualifications:
- ADEC Qualified Person
- 8-Hour HAZWOPER Refresher
- CPR/First Aid Certification
- Experience with federal projects
- Database creation and maintenance experience
- Knowledge of risk assessment and toxicology
- Familiarity with Alaska Native cultures
