Position Overview:

Power your future with Qualus as a Lead Civil Structural Engineer. In this role, the candidate will design and detail mat and pier type foundations for substation structures. Additionally, the candidate will design substation structures ranging from simple equipment supports to overhead line towers. All work will be performed with emphasis on quality and project costs following clients requirements and internal companys quality control and quality assurance practices.

The candidate may also complete substation designs, as necessary. Work will include applying applicable codes and client standards to design general arrangements, equipment and electrical layouts, elevation views, grading and fence plans, foundation plan and details, substation rigid bus arrangements, structure details, and bills of material.

Responsibilities:
  • Apply standard civil codes and techniques for substation project work with a focus on civil design including site layout, grading, storm drainage (retention and/or detention ponds), roads, and environmental (oil containment and SPCC) and governmental permitting requirements. Design may be for both new and retrofits of existing stations.
  • Develop overall conceptual design plans in the initial development phase of new projects.
  • Work with renewable energy developers and other clients with support specific to schedules and cost estimates.
  • Develop the design concept for drainage systems in accordance with established standards.
  • Analyze and interpret public agencies regulations and procedures.
  • Design foundations using commercially available software such as LPILE.
  • Develop steel structure models for rigid bus and equipment supports.
  • Delegating, planning, prioritizing, and reviewing the work of other engineers, designers, and drafters will be critical.
  • Perform companys Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) processes are being followed on all design packages.
  • Establish and maintain professional relationships with our external business partners; Present information and respond to questions from individual or groups of clients, permitting agencies, and the general public.
  • Direct and/or participate in client meetings/job site visits to collect or deliver design and engineering data.
  • Mentor less experienced staff on a wide range of technical and project management skills.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines.
  • Some marketing responsibilities and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelors of Science or Masters in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited institution.
  • 7+ years of civil structural and foundations experience.
  • Proficient with drafting programs such as AutoCAD and MicroStation a plus.
  • Experience in transmission, distribution and generating stations is a plus.
  • Must have strong analytical and computer skills. Must be able to identify necessary software to complete needed design work.
