The Major Gifts Officer is responsible for building long-term relationships with donors, prospects, and partners of OMSI to accomplish the mission and drive forward the 20-year vision for supporting science learning in communities across the state and region. To do so, they will fully embody OMSI's values as a collaborator, value learning, foster a sense of belonging amongst colleagues and partners, and steward their relationships with donors and other connections to evolve OMSI for future generations. This position will work as a member of the highly collaborative Development team to create, implement, and evaluate strategies and efforts to achieve annual financial goals and multi-year fundraising campaigns. They will play an important role in developing a strong community centered philanthropic culture in the development department and across the organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develops and engages a portfolio of approximately 125 current and prospective individual donors (giving mid $1,000+ to major-level gifts $20,000) with a focus on qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship;
  • Prepares and implements engagement strategies and tactics, with emphasis on in-person meetings, for current and prospective donors to solicit, close, and steward major gifts;
  • Uses data Salesforce tracking systems and "moves management" to increase giving across the portfolio over time;
  • Integrates planned giving opportunities into conversations with prospects and donors;
  • Tracks progress against annual and multi-year goals and benchmarks;
  • Collaborates with Development of Director and Development Team to identify and qualify new and lapsed donors for integration into gift officer portfolios;
  • Works alongside the Director of Development and Development Operations Manager to facilitate smooth transitions to managed portfolios for qualified donors;
  • Maintains donor records in Salesforce in a detailed and timely fashion to departmental standards and protocols in quality and quantity of information;
  • Participates in planning, executing, and evaluating OMSI's cultivation, fundraising, and stewardship events, including the annual Gala, to support organizational fundraising goals;
  • With the Director of Development and Stewardship and Events Manager, creates, implements, and evaluates stewardship strategies for the Emeritus Board and/or JC Stevens Legacy Society as assigned by the Director of Development.
Working Conditions:
  • This position is exempt, paid salaried;
  • This position is regular full-time scheduled for 40 hours/week;
    • Requires working onsite at the museum location;
    • Requires occasional travel around and outside of the Portland Metro area;
    • Requires working on some weekends, holidays, and/or evenings.
  • Physical Demands: 60% sitting, 25% standing, 15% lifting/carrying 50;
    • Ability to push or pull carts and other equipment for food/drink deliveries up to 250
  • Vision Demands include:
    • Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches of less)
    • Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more)
    • Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus)

Secondary Responsibilities

Secondary responsibilities include-but are not limited to-the following:
  • Attends events and provides on-site assistance at events as necessary;
  • Participates in team and museum-wide meetings and projects;
  • Supports individual donor strategy and planning across all portfolios;
  • Participates in museum wide meetings and projects;
  • Supports fundraising and fundraising events in other lines of development revenue
  • Assumes other responsibilities and tasks assigned by the Development leadership team.

    • Ability to work with a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) and/or database system;
    • Proficient with Google Suite and Microsoft Office, and the ability to effectively utilize spreadsheets and databases;
    • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques surrounding a prospect management/moves management program in a complex development operation;
    • Effective at building and maintaining strong relationships with people of diverse talents and backgrounds, with an emphasis on relationship stewardship and advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through a racial equity lens.
PREFERENCES:
  • Experience in Salesforce or other database program;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in a non-English priority language in Oregon.
Education & Work Experiences:

REQUIREMENTS:
  • 5 years of cumulative experience with increasing responsibility:
    • Demonstrated experience closing gifts;
    • Demonstrated donor relations, portfolio management, and stewardship experience;
    • Demonstrated experience working with the public, in both formal and informal settings;
    • Worked collaboratively with both small and large teams/departments across an organization;
    • Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced environment, often with stringent and overlapping deadlines.
  • Demonstrated experience or ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and talents in professional work environments.
PREFERENCES:
  • Experience with planned giving;
  • Experience working with volunteers.
