POSITION SUMMARY

The Teaching Kitchen Assistant (TA) works with Chef Instructors, Teaching Kitchen employees, and students to ensure the smooth functioning of lab classes.The TA works to ensure that the kitchen is prepared for classes and has all the resources necessary for class instruction.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepares and readies the teaching kitchen for class each day prior to the start of class by setting out and organizing the daily equipment needs.
  • Receives the daily food and beverage requisitions, delivers those materials to the teaching kitchen and distributes accordingly.
  • Assists the Chef Instructor with setting up of the daily "demo(s)", including ingredients and tools.
  • Coordinates with the Teaching Kitchen Coordinator for re-stocking par goods and general kitchen supplies.
  • Assists in keeping kitchen areas, refrigeration, freezers, tool storage, and dry stores organized.
  • Works to assist students during class, by answering questions and assisting with hands-on techniques as demonstrated by the Chef Instructor.
  • Follows all established food safety and personal safety protocols, ensuring students do so as well.
  • Helps the Chef Instructor keep students safe by watching for any dangerous practices that could lead to injury.
  • Supervises the class when the Chef Instructor needs to temporarily leave the teaching kitchen.
  • Assists in maintaining order in the dish room and related storage areas.
  • Helps setup and break-down the daily tasting buffet.
  • Places work orders for any damaged or broken equipment/facilities issues.
  • Assists the class in cleaning the kitchen at the end of each shift.
  • Maintains an impeccable and exemplary work uniform as an example for our students at all times.Enforces the CIA dress-code with students.
  • Any and all other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
Experience:
  • Minimum six (6) months of cooking or relevant work experience.
Licenses / Certifications:
  • California Food Handler's Certificate, or ability to obtain a certificate within 30 days of hire.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • AOS or other degree from the Culinary Institute of America.
  • Culinary / Baking demonstration experience.
  • Previous culinary or baking and pastry practical experience.
REQUIRED SKILLS
  • Excellent written, verbal communication, and presentation skills required.Must have demonstrated ability in organizational, time management, problem solving and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills; ability to be adaptable, dependable and handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong customer service skills.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work overtime on nights and weekends as required by business needs.
  • Must be able to bend, reach and stand for a minimum of eight (8) hours daily.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds with assistance.
  • Ability to withstand high ambient temperatures while working in close proximity of cooking equipment.
