Serves as back-up to HR Manager and supports staff HR as needed.For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

**Department Description**
- The Department of Orthopedic Surgery is responsible for the department's academic, teaching, patient care professional services and research activities under the UCSF School of Medicine. The department has over 400 academic and staff personnel at multiple sites (UC, Mt. Zion, MB, SFGH, and VAMC).

**Required Qualifications**
- Bachelor’s degree in HR, Organizational Management, or related area, or the equivalent combination of education and experience / training
- 1 year of more experience in a related area, or the equivalent combination of education and experience / training
- Knowledge of human resources management systems and other related business software programs and systems
- Analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations to Chairs / unit management
- Demonstrated organization, problem solving, and communication skills
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources
- Advanced interpersonal skills at all levels within the organization; advanced service orientation and critical thinking skills; and attention to detail. In depth ability to use organizational skills to multi-task in a high-volume environment

**Preferred Qualifications**
- Knowledge of organization, college and departmental formal and informal academic policies and procedures and understanding of variances to stated policies
- Knowledge of academic culture and educational goals of discipline(s) served
