**Organization Overview**

Congregations Organized for Prophetic Engagement (C.O.P.E.) is a 501(c)3 grassroots,

Faith-Based organization established in 2000 by a core group of Pastors. Based in the Inland Empire, C.O.P.E is a Black led and faith rooted organization that builds the capacity of clergy and community leaders to protect and revitalize the neighborhoods in which they live, work and worship. C.O.P.E. accomplishes this mission through leadership development, proactive grassroots community organizing and civic engagement. We recruit, train, and develop grassroots leaders, youth, and adults in the principles of community organizing to identify and develop systemic solutions to the conditions they

face. As a multi-issue organization, C.O.P.E.’s work addresses:

- Educational inequity through various school reform efforts
- Access to quality health care for vulnerable populations through policy advocacy,
- community education, and special programs
- Housing justice to advocate for systems that prevent housing discrimination
- displacement and ensure access to affordable and secure housing.
- Ending mass incarceration through various justice transformation efforts to end the cycle of mass incarceration that largely impacts Black, Indigenous and poor communities of color.

**Position Summary**

**Essential Duties and Responsibilities**

**Work Area I: Base Building**:

- Engage directly with youth, families, and community members to center their voices and experiences in organizing efforts for education justice
- Collaborate with youth to identify key issues affecting their lives and the local education system, developing strategies for accountability and transformation.
- Recruit new members through various outreach methods such as door-to-door engagement, one-on-one meetings, and organizing activities.
- Support the leadership development and training of youth leaders to engage effectively in advocacy and organizing activities.

**Work Area II: Youth Programs and Projects**
- **R.E.A.L. (Race.Education.Artivism.Leadership) Program**:

- Work with the Director of Organizing and Programs to reinstate the R.E.A.L. Program in schools and/or at the office
- Refine session materials where necessary including flyers, presentations, handouts, media, articles, manipulatives, etc.
- Build and maintain relationships with students and school/district decision makers to sustain the R.E.A.L. Program
- Sustain the R.E.A.L. program in schools and/or at the office by:

- Attending and facilitating weekly R.E.A.L. Program sessions
- Maintaining positive relationships with participants and keeping a detailed documentation of attendance, one-on-ones, etc.
- Recruitment of youth to participate in C.O.P.E. related activities and volunteer opportunities that include phone banking, canvassing, public comment, general meeting assistance, etc.
- Keeping a clearly documented case record of students, their participations and evaluations of student leaders
- **Oversight of Youth Programs and Activities**:

- Coordinate, attend and/or facilitate youth meetings and activities focused on higher education, including participation in the CECSN Regional Group and the Inland Empire Higher Education Hub.
- Organize and oversee various youth programs and activities that may not be directly linked to education, such as engagements with young people in local congregations.
- Actively promote and maintain comprehensive records of youth volunteer opportunities within C.O.P.E., ensuring accessibility and transparency for interested participants or relevant institutions (schools, youth court, etc.).

**Work Area III: Leadership Development, & Political Education**
- Deepen understanding of the focus issues and the political landscape surrounding key policy campaigns at the state and local level to support education and engagement among grassroots constituencies. Community Organizers are expected to dedicate time to researching, reading, and studying to deepen understanding of issues
- Work with the Director of Organizing and Programs to conduct political education workshops and training sessions to raise awareness and build capacity among community members to advocate for systemic changes in the education system
- Develop curriculums and programs to provide context and historical understanding of the issues being addressed

**Work Area IV: Organizing Campaigns & Coalition Building**
- Assist youth in organizing and executing youth-led organizing campaigns as it relates to C.O.P.E.’s mission and issue areas, including community forums and outreach events, to raise awareness and mobilize support
