The Center for African Immigrants and Refugees Organization (CAIRO)’s mission is dedicated to enhancing social justice and achieving parity for the diverse African immigrants and refugee communities in Oregon and Central Minnesota through community organizing, collaborative leadership, and service advocacy. We envision a more just and equitable society in which children, youth, and families live in sustained, supportive communities, which reinforce the cultural wealth and lived experience of the family.


The Schools, Parents and Community Engaged (SPACE) Program is a student school-based and community support program that works closely with African students, parents and schools to build spaces where children feel safe, supported and ready to learn. We work with African immigrant students in classrooms, within families and in the broader community. 


Position Summary

The Communications and Events Coordinator works closely with supervisors to develop and implement CAIRO’s activities and events. This position works primarily with the SPACE Program, but collaborates with other departments as needed. Attention to detail of times, dates, names, numbers is very important in this role, as is a strong sense of initiative. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience with project management or logistics and an understanding of CAIRO’s mission and community we serve. 


This is a full-time, non-exempt position that does require semi-regular evening and weekend work when events occur. This position reports to one of our SPACE Program Managers. 


Salary: $24.50 - 27.00 per hour, depending on experience

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate interdepartmental activities and schedule events after appropriate planning and development.
  • Determine appropriate facilities for programs and reserve rooms and facilities for use.
  • Book buses through First Student and coordinate drivers for student transportation.
  • Promote events through CAIRO publicity and local media when appropriate. 
  • Supervise and evaluate all student activity events and confer frequently with supervisors on student activity matters.
  • Responsible for managing the budget and requisitioning all payments related to these activities. Provide expenditure reports in a timely manner.
  • Maintains and regularly publishes an up-to-date calendar of activities and events across programs that is made readily available to all staff.
  • Work with supervisors to coordinate activities of students that promote student leadership, participation in CAIRO decision-making, and enrichment of student life and manage the budget associated with these functions. 
  • Work with SPACE Agents on various schools and other special assignments as assigned by the administration and/or the supervisor.
  • Serve as co-advisor for the Program Managers (CAIRO Admin), provide direction for the Student activities, and help oversee Student activities, including sports, STEAM, field trips, Co-advisor for school Peer Mentoring program. Assist with programs as needed.
  • Create, edit, publish and share content (text, images, video, fliers ) that builds meaningful connections and encourages community members to engage including but not limited to: quarterly CAIRO newsletter, social media posts, and website content. 


Abilities, Skills, & Experience

  • Preferred: 1-2 years of experience in a role with similar responsibilities. 
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule including evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with students, faculty, and the general public.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationship with students, employees and the public.
  • Strong ability to take initiative, balance priorities, and work on multiple projects at a time.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems as they arise with relative independence.  
  • Strong competency with spreadsheets, familiarity with Google Workspace and Microsoft products.
  • Mailchimp, Wordpress skills preferred but not required.


Education

  • Strongly preferred: Bachelor’s degree in communications, English, or a related field.


Work Location/Environment

  • Reliable transportation required.
  • Hybrid remote position – in-person work for events and meetings required.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds (event supplies)
