Job Summary

The Communication Specialist Temp is responsible for the creation and maintenance of written, digital and oral content for various mediums and audiences in support of the Port’s overall communications efforts to promote the Port’s mission, work, and value to local, regional, national and global economies. This role can expect to perform various tasks as needed to support the communications, marketing and business development functions of the Port, including varying levels of involvement in stakeholder outreach, engagement and event planning- some of which take place in the evenings and on weekends.


This is an onsite/in office position.


Copy Writing & Editing (written, digital & oral communications)

· Support copy writing/editing needs of the Port’s Communications Department and other departments of the Port as directed by the Communications Director or designated Port employee.

· Produce professional and relevant written, digital and oral content in alignment with the Port’s communications program and brand voice to inform, educate and communicate a variety of Port target audiences/stakeholders (i.e. general public, Port District residents, business community, other government and partner agencies, lawmakers, media, customers, etc.) using a variety of mediums, including but not limited to:

o Print & Digital Publications/Newsletters

o Press Releases/Media Advisories

o Editorials/Advertorials

o Special features/stories

o Port websites

o Internal/External E-mail

o Marketing Materials & Campaigns

o Social Media

o Fact Sheets

o FAQs

o Talking Points

o Support Letters

o Grants

· Attend meetings and events, as well as conduct research and interviews as necessary to gather information to develop content.

· Work with various Port departments and staff to keep internal and external facing communications up-to-date and accurate (i.e. website, promotional materials, etc.).

· Modify, adapt, revise content in response to edits/feedback.


Publication & Communication Assets Design:

· Support production of content for use in various print and digital communications and marketing efforts

· Edit/modify established publication, newsletter and marketing material design templates using Adobe InDesign.

· Work collaboratively with the Port’s Communications team to provide design recommendations for Port publications/collaterals to support written content listed above.

· Coordinate printing/mailing of publications/newsletters.


General Communication, Marketing and Events:

· Support communications and marketing efforts for the Port’s various business lines (Seaport, Marina, Real Estate) and key lines of effort (Environment, Public Access)

· Support the production of various communications and marketing materials to educate and communicate with a variety of Port audiences.

· Collect, monitor and interpret various data sets and analytics to measure effectiveness of Port communications and marketing efforts

· Manage the Port’s AlertSense notification system to support emergency notifications, customer alerts; maintain list serves

· Manage and maintain Port of Everett websites (i.e. external and internal facing).

· Provide support and/or backfill for various communications department tasks and duties as requested by the Director


Other:

· Take photos/video as needed.

· Assist in the maintenance of the Port’s communications archives in accordance with Washington State records retention requirements.

· Assume responsibility of special projects as assigned

· Perform other duties as assigned



Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (KSA’s) Required of all Employees:

The possession of the following KSA’s by all exempt Port employees assures that the Port is maintaining a knowledgeable, capable, professional staff that is committed to the Port’s mission. As such, all exempt Port employees are expected to:

· Demonstrate expertise specific to their profession, and maintain appropriate licensing/certification

· Display the diplomacy necessary to address sensitive issues or complaints—both public and private

· Demonstrate effective conflict resolution and personal negotiation skills

· Exhibit high ethical standards in the execution of position responsibilities

· Cultivate and contribute to a dynamic, team-oriented work environment by being responsive, timely, respectful and knowledgeable

· Communicate effectively in English, including the ability to read, write and interpret complex documents and other written material

· Have the ability to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)

· Possess a valid driver’s license, and maintain insurability under the Port’s auto insurance plan

· Flexibility to occasionally work or respond to concerns during evening hours and on weekends when necessary to fulfill position responsibilities

Preferred Work Experience:

· Two (2) or more years of experience working collaboratively in an office or customer service environment

· Two (2) or more years of professional copywriting experience creating content for both written and digital communications with a solid portfolio of work

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

· Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications or a closely related field

· Exceptional copy writing/editing skills for various written, digital and oral mediums

· Skilled in Associated Press Style copy writing/editing

· Ability to adapt content style, tone, look and feel based on target audience

· Ability to generate quality content quickly

· Strong interview, research and data gathering skills to support writing

· Ability to work independently and with a team to meet deadlines

· Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) & Adobe Acrobat Pro

· Intermediate to Advanced user of Adobe InDesign for publication/marketing material modifications and/or design

· Basic knowledge to proficient in Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop

· Proficient in key social media platforms (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn
