PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

The USGS Geologic Hazards Science Center (GHSC) has an ongoing need for system administration of all data center and enterprise architecture hardware and associated software, management of system replacement and upgrade projects, and Windows Server administration. The GHSC utilizes a VMware architecture as the foundation for the complex network of virtual machines hosting applications that perform acquisition of real-time data, automated processing and product generation, and distribution of hazard information. The virtual infrastructure is deployed across three dedicated, geographically redundant data centers. The infrastructure also includes redundant hardware both physical and virtual, redundant equipment power supplies, paired switches, and firewalls. All equipment in the data centers are plugged into redundant UPS units that are protected by a building generator. The data centers are cooled by redundant CRAC units to further reduce the chance of a single point of failure. 24x7x365 monitoring alerts on-call staff who respond immediately to any issues before they become major outages. The primary objectives of this contract are to obtain professional services to assess, administer, document, and continually improve the existing virtual infrastructure; design, develop, test, implement, document, and maintain systems for resolving issues and accomplishing tasks through the configuration and maintenance of Windows and associated computers and software systems.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Information Systems or similar and/or equivalent work experience (7 years’ work experience in lieu of degree)
  • Database Administration experience helpful

JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • · Serve as a Tier-1 IT emergency responder providing phone and on-site support. Tracking tickets are entered, responded to, and/or closed as appropriate.
  • · Perform Windows Server and Windows OS System Administrator duties including, but not limited to:
    • Install and configure new hardware and software.
    • Monitor and review system logs and detect and troubleshoot problems.
    • Write and maintain moderately complex scripts in PowerShell.
    • Document the configuration of the systems.
    • Establish and maintain suitable resource and performance monitoring on all systems.
    • Provide user support for office environments. This includes setting up computers and monitors and configuring wiring and network cables so that they are neat and orderly.
    • Develop and maintain procedures for applying patches to major subsystems and services, roles, and filesystem components within a Windows Systems environment and perform operating system and patch testing on all changes prior to installation.
    • Ensure parity between dev, staging and production environments.
    • Understand the applicable processes and procedures of the organization and make recommendations in the continuous improvement of those processes and procedures, providing for management analysis and recommendations on continuous improvement.
    • Collaborate and partner with team members on technical projects.
    • Research, procure, and implement new hardware and software solutions as required for geologic hazards research and operations which support the Program mission.
    • Participate in planning of both short-term and long-term projects where problems or needs are defined, feasibility of proposals are evaluated, and workable solutions are developed to ensure that computing capabilities and infrastructure are sufficient to meet the needs of the science center’s evolving technology demands.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The Contractor shall be required to verbally report on progress during weekly meetings. Priorities and coordination of the work required will be discussed and milestones will be established as needed. At the conclusion of each task, the Contractor shall demonstrate that the changes implemented work properly without detrimental impact on GHSC operations. The Contractor shall also provide detailed documentation or update existing documentation regarding all aspects of the task. The COR, or Technical POC, will inspect all materials delivered to the government under this contract and determine that they are complete, and that the documentation is adequate.
