The Laboratory Specialist position, working out of our Huntsville, AL Genomics office, will perform an array of genomics testing such as RNA/DNA isolation, QC steps, library preparation, and qPCR testing. Position Summary:

Discovery is looking for a talented and passionate Laboratory Specialist to join our dynamic Genomics team. As a Laboratory Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in our scientific endeavors. If you have a passion for science and a knack for teamwork, this is the role for you The Laboratory Specialist contributes to our mission by ensuring consistency of practices, based on standard operating procedures.

A Day in the Life of a Lab Specialist at Discovery Life Sciences:

  • Operation of basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, liquid handlers, and laboratory specific equipment.
  • Operation of specialized laboratory equipment.
  • Performance in the testing of new laboratory protocols and SOPs in development.

Position Qualifications (Education, Skills, Experience):

  • Bachelor's degree in life sciences with a minimum of 2 years of laboratory experience -OR- Master’s degree in life sciences and related laboratory coursework
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work inclusively and collaboration with a diverse population
  • Prior laboratory experience demonstrating the ability to understand and perform established procedures and protocols.
  • Proficiency with basic lab functions such as pipetting and basic laboratory math (conversions and calculations).
  • Organizational skills along with excellent oral and written communication ability.
  • Ability to multitask and manage target completion dates.
  • Proficient user of windows-based computer programs including word processing, spreadsheet, data management, internet and e-mail (MS 365 products preferred).
  • Ability to troubleshoot basic laboratory equipment is required.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex equipment or software problems is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight is preferred.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate in IQ/OQ/PQ of laboratory equipment
  • Identify materials/reagents needs and communicate with team leads
  • Maintain all appropriate records, as required by different processes (lab notebook, sample information, worksheets, etc.).
  • Participate in general laboratory maintenance for equipment, materials, and/or reagents
  • Compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements for the biopharmaceutical industry (e.g., GCP/GCLP, 21 CFR Part 11, CAP/CLIA, HIPAA).
  • Assist with assigned corrective action/preventative actions for deviations.
  • Troubleshoot basic equipment problems and identify needed service, if required.
  • Perform basic training and mentoring of other staff members is preferred.
  • Ability to follow instructions from senior laboratory staff within established timelines.
  • Adherence to EH&S and regulatory requirements (i.e., PPE)
  • Demonstrated ability to review laboratory data for quality and consistency is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform basic laboratory troubleshooting is required.
  • Mentor junior staff is preferred.
  • Assist in training of junior staff.
  • Ensure compliance with all laws and regulations applicable to the Company and its operations
  • Perform all duties in compliance with listed SOPs and policies.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor. These may, on occasion, be unrelated to the position described here.
