POSITION OBJECTIVE


Under the general oversight of the Administrative Director of the Laboratory, the Senior Laboratory Specialist is accountable for conducting a variety of laboratory analyses within designated technical domains.

Engages in research and applies relevant protocols, standards, and technical literature to operate autonomously. Acts as a technical advisor to colleagues in the assigned areas.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Completes all necessary procedures in each clinical task; organizes, compiles, and communicates results in accordance with internal protocols. Ensures the functionality of assigned technical areas to guarantee that all tests are conducted within clinically effective timeframes.

Calibrates various analytical instruments and performs daily quality assurance checks, making adjustments as required, and conducts operator maintenance.

  • Executes routine and advanced procedures in designated areas utilizing professional expertise and established protocols. Conducts a range of chemical and mechanical assessments to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze the presence or absence of various components in patient specimens, including blood, plasma, cerebrospinal fluid, and other properly submitted samples.
  • Maintains technical expertise in all procedures executed in the assigned departments.
  • Ensures adherence to all quality assurance and quality control standards; informs the director of any unresolved issues.
  • Implements new tests and methodologies in accordance with the prescribed protocols and the requirements set forth by the Medical Director.
  • Performs maintenance as defined operationally; alerts the director of any identified concerns.
  • Conducts Quality Control (QC) as defined operationally; assesses each QC test and takes corrective measures as necessary. Submits QC for peer group evaluation as appropriate. Reviews QC in all assigned areas on a daily and monthly basis; takes necessary actions based on findings.
  • Troubleshoots testing and/or analyzer issues using established methods and analytical skills.
  • Responsible for the stewardship of all laboratory equipment and supplies; maintains a clean and organized workspace. Conducts inventory checks in assigned areas and ensures that adequate supplies are available daily.
  • Serves as a resource for other staff, ensuring technical proficiency in all procedures performed in the assigned departments. Assigns tasks to subordinate personnel as necessary.
  • Accepts assignments in other sections or shifts as required. As workload demands, both assigned shifts and workstations may be adjusted. Offers support to other sections when necessary to manage workloads.
  • Communicates effectively and professionally at all times. Keeps staff informed of all information affecting departmental operations. Conducts training for new personnel and provides ongoing education.
  • Assists in the analysis and comparison of established and proposed procedures and develops additional procedures as needed for departmental review and adoption. Maintains current and accurate policies and procedures for assigned areas.
  • Continuously evaluates operations and makes recommendations for performance enhancement in assigned areas.
  • Provides training to other personnel as necessary; assesses results and certifies the technical competence of those trained.
  • Adheres to the HMH Legal Compliance Code of Conduct and all HMH policies.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and ensures appropriate handling of protected health information (PHI).
  • Ensures a safe working environment, follows all safety protocols, and reports safety concerns appropriately. Continuously assesses the area to ensure a safe environment.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.

INTERACTIONS AND COLLABORATION


All positions at Huntsville Memorial Hospital are part of an interdisciplinary team, participating in the care and service delivery process through effective collaboration with other team members.

Primarily interacts with hospital staff, medical personnel, patients, and visitors.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology is required. A Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology, Chemistry, Biology, or Microbiology is preferred.

Experience:
A minimum of two years of experience in a hospital laboratory setting is required.

Licensure/Certification:
Current MLT (ASCP) or equivalent is required. MT (ASCP) or equivalent is preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Frequent:
Sitting, standing, walking, and reaching.

Occasional:
Lifting, carrying, bending, and squatting.

Visual and auditory acuity is required; color vision is necessary for perceiving solution colors. Work is conducted indoors, with adequate ventilation and a comfortable temperature.

Possible exposure to:
Toxic/caustic chemicals or detergents, moving mechanical parts, potential electric shock, communicable diseases, and bloodborne pathogens.
