JOB SUMMARY

The Substance Abuse (SUD) Counselor provides drug and alcohol counseling to adult clients authorized to receive substance abuse treatment under a residential substance abuse or mental health program. Counselors interact with clients on a day-to-day basis providing individual and group counseling, as well as engaging in rehabilitation activities. The Substance Abuse Counselor provides clients with orientation, training, substance abuse recovery skills and education. SUD counselor facilities Individual and groups sessions and leadership necessary to provide clients with the ability to recover from behavioral health issues. Counselors are responsible for a caseload of 7 to 10 clients. Documentation is done by the ODS-DMC CalAIMS standards. The Substance Abuse Counselor may be assigned additional counseling duties.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Comply with all CalAIMS documentation requirements for ODS-DMC programs.
  • Work within the scope of practice and code of ethics for SUD Counselors.
  • Maintain confidentiality in compliance with CRF 42, part 2
  • Provide screenings and intakes.
  • Operate and oversee the day-to-day functions of the program within program rules and regulations.
  • Maintain a caseload as prescribed by the Program Manager. Provide a variety of interventions including individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, collateral services, and other relevant sobriety-related services to clients. Using Motivational Interviewing, CBT and relapse prevention skills.
  • Identify and refer any mental health issues to the LPHA or medical director for assessment.
  • Document, review, and chart client progress completing all required paperwork on time.
  • Attend treatment meetings and provide input to Problem List. Prepares problem list and discharge plans and discharge summaries within the time frames required.
  • Create a problem list during assessment and throughout treatment. Designate new target goals for clients consistent with overall treatment goals.
  • Initiate appropriate and timely interventions.
  • Integrate the clinical concept with sound theoretical and practical applications of rehabilitative and individual group and milieu counseling principles.
  • Provide input to develop and improve program servicing and delivery.
  • Set daily goals.
  • Assure clients are informed of inappropriate behavior.
  • Assist other staff in dealing with problematic client behavior.
  • Schedule daily activity and recreational activities and short-term special groups.
  • Act as co-leader in assigned groups.
  • Comply with all Crossroads program rules, policies and procedures including HIPPA standards.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must meet the following:
    • Certification through a recognized alcohol and drug certification entity plus two years of experience working with alcohol and drug related issues/addictions, preferred, or actively working toward a recognized alcohol and drug certification and two years of experience working with alcohol and drug related issues/addictions.
    • Working knowledge of the ODS-DMC CalAIMS state documentation standards
    • Worked in San Diego County SanWITS or Cerner client data base.
  • Valid California driver’s license and current auto insurance coverage.
  • Ability to produce legible, clear, and concise written documentation.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and EHR software.
  • Ability to set priorities, problem solve, and react appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively collaborate with a team.
