Senior Process Engineer

The Senior Process Engineer is responsible for evaluating existing processes in manufacturing systems to reduce cost, improve sustainability, and develop best practices within the production process. A primary function is to plan, troubleshoot and execute process improvement projects which will lead to new or modified processes in support of manufacturing operations. The Process Engineer will monitor daily chemical process plant operation and work with the plant operations, reliability, and leadership teams to manage operations to improve reliability, efficiency and plant capacity. In addition to the enhancement and/or development of new and existing processes, support both product maintenance and profit improvement initiatives for existing products and processes as well as cost savings and support of product quality improvement initiatives are also essential requirements of this position.

Education and Experience

  • B.S. Degree in Chemical Engineering with Chemical Engineering experience.
  • 15+ years of Plant Process Engineering experience in Chemical Process facility (preferred) or related industry (i.e. petroleum, oil & gas, or pharmaceutical).
  • Experience troubleshooting and optimizing existing batch manufacturing processes, including responsibility for maintaining and improving yield, cycle time, and quality goals on those processes.
  • Background in statistical process control and statistical techniques.
  • Experience managing projects up to $500,000 per project, from conceptual design to commissioning.
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously is preferred.
  • Experience reading piping and instrument diagrams, electrical control schematics and loop drawings.
  • Experience working in a union environment preferred; but not required.

Technical Knowledge

  • Very strong process engineering skills, with an emphasis on troubleshooting and process improvement.
  • Knowledge of prevailing engineering principles, forecasting, and budgeting.
  • Experience in both batch and continuous operations desirable.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally with operations, engineering, and chemistry subject matter experts.
  • Understands all applicable process technology, equipment and control technology.
  • Ability to design and develop (or assist in) processing solutions that meet manufacturing objectives.
  • Must have demonstrated experience, knowledge or coursework in Environmental Engineering Principles
  • Apply principles of mathematics, statistics and engineering to resolve recurring process issues.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Experience using process modeling software (ChemCad, Aspen, Hysis)
  • Knowledge of PSM – Process Safety Management is preferred.
  • Knowledge of State/Federal EPA and OSHA compliance requirements.
  • Six Sigma training is beneficial and considered a plus

Work Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated capability to analyze problems and provide accurate solutions.
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills, as well as a keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage and lead multiple projects and priorities.
  • Strong data management and organization skills; proficient in Microsoft Office (MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Ability to communicate clearly and listen attentively at all levels with internal and external parties. Must be team player, flexible and innovative.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to present complex topics in a concise manner.
  • Ability to work in a diverse team environment including interactions with technical/administrative staff, business team leaders, and contract personnel.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during the course of the project work.
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed and/or required.
  • Must be able to accept and respond to telephone call inquires when not on site premises.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

The position is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving production operational vehicles, mechanical equipment / piping, chemical fumes, odors, dust and airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions (cold & heat, rain, and snow), and confined spaces. The employee may potentially be exposed to hazardous chemicals. A respirator may be required at times.

  • Must be able to wear personal protective equipment.
  • Must be able to respond to visual and audible alarms.
  • Must be able to work around hazardous chemicals and exposure to dust.
  • Ability to regularly work in and be exposed to outside weather elements (i.e. rain, snow, cold, heat).
  • Physical ability to regularly work around and on industrial equipment, including frequent climbing of stairs and ladders, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, crouch or squat, twist, stooping and standing. Frequent need to talk, hear and use hands. Must be able to occasionally lift moderately heavy objects up to 40 pounds.
