PAY RANGE: $140,000 to $175,000.00 per year

FTE: This is a full time, FLSA-exempt salaried position, estimated at 40-50 hours per week, including occasional evenings and weekends.

Supervises: Six Senior Directors (Operations; Housing and Facilities; Programs; Training, Consulting, and Workforce Initiatives; BHRC and People & Culture) and Executive Leadership Team Assistant

Location: The MHAAO office is located at 411 NE 19th Ave, Portland, Oregon.

Position overview and essential duties and responsibilities:

The Deputy Director is a new and critical leadership position. They will work closely and collaboratively with the Executive Director, serving as the “number two” in our leadership as well as “chief problem solver.”

The Deputy Director will:

  • Supervise, direct, develop, support, and evaluate our Senior Director of Operations; Senior Director of Housing and Facilities; Senior Director of Programs; Senior Director of Training, Consulting, and Workforce Initiatives; Senior Director BHRC, and Senior Director of People & Culture; and Executive Leadership Team Assistant.
  • Serve on our Executive Leadership Team, helping guide through decision-making, advancing our strategic plan and organizational priorities.
  • Provide organization- and staff-wide internal leadership, effective coordination, relationship-building, systems development, and capacity building to keep things running smoothly.
  • Help strengthen and support our mission and culture, building on our foundation of Peer values and our commitment to equity.
  • Provide external leadership with community partners, funders, and public and private agencies in coordination with the Executive Director
  • Consult, collaborate, and work closely with the Executive Director on all strategic initiatives and expansion.
  • Serve as MHAAO’s primary leader in the Executive Director’s absence.
  • Other duties that are similar, related, or a logical extension of the position.

Successful candidates will have the following demonstrated experience, skills, qualities, and abilities

Note: MHAAO will consider any combination of formal education (such as a high school diploma/GED, Bachelor’s, or Master’s degree in a related field), training, professional or volunteer experience, transferable skills, and applicable life experiences that contribute to your ability to perform essential job functions.

  • Commitment to MHAAO’s mission as a peer-run organization that honors the voice of lived experience and is dedicated to self-directed recovery and wellness for all.
  • Experience managing for impact, outcomes, and values-based success: At least 5 years of managerial experience with a proven track record of building and running successful, adaptable organizations capable of weathering challenges and seizing opportunities to achieve ambitious goals.
  • Empathetic and able to lead people through change and growth. A trusted leader who can bring people together around a shared vision and strategy. Experience with change management, setting goals, and leading toward solutions and problem-solving.
  • Experience building effective systems and managing risk. Experience creating, improving, and running administrative systems; organizational, contract, and regulatory compliance; and operations.
  • Active and demonstrated commitment to racial equity and social justice: Capacity and commitment to build trust, credibility, and relationships with staff, Peers, and community members and across race, gender, sexual orientation, age, and other identities.
  • Developer of people: Success in recruiting, hiring, motivating, developing, evaluating, and retaining staff. Capacity and skill to train, develop, direct, and support a team of Senior Directors to advance our mission.
  • Team builder: Foster and facilitate a positive and effective team environment; lead staff through active communication, delegation, leadership development, and accountability. Experience with cross-teams collaboration and Peer values, deriving satisfaction and meaning in mission-driven work.
  • Highly relational and collaborative: Cooperative, curious, and good-humored. Comfortable working independently as well as with shared duties, working closely with the Executive Director and as an Executive Leadership Team member.
  • Exceptional communicator: Sensitive and responsive to different communication and learning styles, audience needs, and communication formats.
  • Reliable and flexible: Able to juggle multiple priorities as well as daily prioritization shifts nherent to a large nonprofit.
  • Lived experience: Lived experience of mental and/or addiction recovery and understanding of the consumer/survivor/recovery movement is highly valued.
