Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Director of Major Gifts is responsible for the Humane Rescue Alliance’s Washington, DC major gifts program as well as the personal management of a portfolio of prospects through the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship process for a targeted major gifts initiative. The Director works closely with the Chief Development Officer, Chief Executive Officer, Board of Directors, and other senior staff members in cultivating and soliciting major gifts from individuals.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Develop, implement, and oversee high performing major and principal gifts programs in DC.
  2. Sustain current donors through major donor recognition program, including regular and meaningful communication on program accomplishments.
  3. Identify and cultivate new major donors in partnership with Board of Directors, development office, and senior leadership.
  4. Expand planned giving efforts, including working with functional experts, creating marketing materials and hosting events.
  5. Build bridges throughout each campus with all departments to allow for partnership and collaboration that supports the major gifts programs, as well as the regional organization.
  6. Report on specialized long/short term donor funding according to committed reporting cadence.
  7. Manage gift pledges in partnership with Director of Development Operations.
  8. Develop, maintain, and update a case statement and a list of funding priorities that supports major gift program needs.
  9. Assist the Director of Fundraising Campaigns, CDO, CEO, and Board of Directors with top donor engagement and solicitation for the annual Bark Ball and Spring Campaign. Drive individual donor solicitation for special events.
  10. Develop marketing efforts, including written collateral material, to support major gifts programs.
  11. Ensure ongoing stewardship and follow-ups take place as gifts are made, engaging communications team as necessary.
  12. Manage personal donor profile and support major gifts officer in doing the same.
  13. Hire, train, supervise, and inspire a full-time major gifts program manager.
  14. Always represent HRA in a professional and courteous manner. Provide quality service to the public, volunteers, and employees recognizing their individual contributions to the success of the organization.
  15. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Our ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree, a deep understanding of the non-profit community and a minimum of 8 years of experience in development, with a strong record of securing six and seven figure gifts.
  • Additionally, you should have:
    1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills with a customer service orientation. Ability to communicate effectively, courteously, and professionally with a variety of individuals representing the public, board members, volunteers, donors, and employees. Strong, strategic and creative problem-solving skills.
    2. Keen attention to detail.
    3. Demonstrated facilitation and presentation skills.
    4. Ability to apply critical thinking to solve problems in an everyday work setting.
    5. Ability to work independently, but also to work collaboratively – fostering teamwork and addressing conflict constructively and timely.
    6. Ability to develop, manage and evaluate programs that align individual program goals with strategic goals and objectives and to formulate recommendations to improve program delivery and management.
    7. Strong time and project management skills.
    8. Ability to prioritize effectively and meet deadlines.
    9. Willingness to build, train, and mentor staff.
    10. Solid experience with Microsoft office and customer relationship management (CRM) software, Raiser's Edge preferred.
    11. Must have a strong desire to help animals and people, and commitment to keeping families togethers.
    12. Passion for the HRA mission, and for caring for all animals regardless of age, breed, temperament, or species, and supporting and educating members of the public, free of judgment or bias.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in managing a donor portfolio or sales pipeline.
