What are Trust Fund Positions?Trust Fund positions are unique to the Smithsonian. They are paid for from a variety of sources, including the Smithsonian endowment, revenue from our business activities, donations, grants and contracts. Trust employees are not part of the civil service, nor does trust fund employment lead to Federal status. The salary ranges for trust positions are generally the same as for federal positions and in many cases trust and federal employees work side by side. OVERVIEWPlease consider joining the Major Gift team, Office of Advancement, National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute (NZCBI) as we continue to grow and support our animal care and conservation goals, including the arrival of Giant Pandas back to Washington, DC at the end of 2024. Founded in 1889, the Smithsonian’s NZCBI sits on 163 acres in the heart of Washington, DC’s Rock Creek Park and is home to more than 2,200 animals representing almost 400 different species. Additionally, our scientists and researchers play a leading role in the Smithsonian’s global efforts to save wildlife species from extinction and train future generations of conservationists at our sprawling 3,200-acre property in Front Royal, VA. The Office of Advancement raises funds from the private sector to support the research, exhibitions and public programs of NZCBI. The position is based in Washington, DC, and reports to the Director of Major Gifts. Travel, including periodic trips to our Front Royal, VA campus is required. Additionally, after-hours and weekend work are also required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESThe Major Gifts team at NZCBI seeks a creative and energetic relationship builder with a demonstrated record of success with major gift fundraising from individuals and/or corporations. This position will work with curators, animal keepers, scientists, and conservationists to cultivate major gift opportunities for donors across the United States. This is an exceptional opportunity for a professional with strong frontline fundraising skills to play an important role in the future of NZCBI. Duties include identifying, cultivating, and soliciting individual and corporate prospects; working with program leads on proposal development; managing donor relationships; and negotiating complex agreements.
- Manages prospect activity for the major gifts portfolio.
- Seeks opportunities to expand the portfolio and increase giving from current donors.
- Develops individual strategies and execution plans to boost giving and expand the portfolio.
- Executes prospect management practices following established guidelines.
- Aims to maximize opportunities for prospects and donors.
- Ensures timely and accurate recording of activity and information.
- Identifies and engages appropriate stakeholders.
- Collaborates with and supports Advancement staff and others.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum of four years of fundraising experience required.
- Must possess strong leadership and communication skills.
- Progressive fundraising experience, experience with diverse constituents, a drive to succeed, grant proposal writing, and the ability to close major gifts should be demonstrated in your application.
- Proven track record in building philanthropic relationships with corporate prospects and donors.
- Demonstrated ability to achieve aggressive fundraising goals.
- Experience in progressive fundraising and working with diverse constituents.

- Must have strong organizational skills, initiative, and ability to work independently.
