Position Overview:

The Student Financial Aid Advisor is responsible for assisting new and continuing students through the applicable funding process to ensure funding is secured via Title IV, VA, TA, cash, or other miscellaneous funding sources. In this role, the Student Financial Aid Advisor handles all student outreach, advisement, document collection, file review, and awarding that pertains to these funding sources. The Student Financial Aid Advisor works collaboratively with peers to provide students with a seamless and efficient funding process.

General Functions, Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Communicates daily with students via phone and email communication in regards to applicable funding sources while providing exceptional customer service
  • Collects necessary documentation for applicable funding source
  • Processes and awards Title IV funds for all eligible student
  • Certifies Veteran student benefits while maintaining knowledge of Veteran benefit eligibility requirements
  • Services as the point of contact for students utilizing Tuition Assistance funds including processing Tuition Assistance documents
  • Processes all employer, scholarship, and 529K plan documents/invoices
  • Complies with all Federal, State, accreditation and institutional policies and procedures
  • Coordinates payment plans with students for balances owed to school
  • Prepares operational tracking reports as requested by management
  • Assists with file reviews, audits and other regulatory requirements as needed
  • Completes all ISIR review including conflicting information, verification, and C-code resolution. Follows all Title IV policies and procedures
  • Handles exit counseling for all dropped and graduated Title IV loan recipients
  • Sends out and collects all necessary post withdrawal disbursement forms
  • Updates all necessary systems with pertinent student information
  • Coordinates cancellations and start date changes
  • Produces and sends all award letters
  • Other tasks as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Core Competencies:

  • Experience applying financial aid programs and federal, state and institutional regulations and policies;
  • Experience in student advising methods and financial aid instructions;
  • Knowledge of financial aid need analysis and packaging;
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and make decisions;
  • Ability to produce large volumes of accurate work under pressure and meet deadlines;
  • Ability to provide guidance and instructions to a wide variety of students;
  • Ability to work with initiative and innovation; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
  • Working knowledge of automated financial aid systems;
  • Ability to keep accurate records and maintain confidentiality;
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and harmonious working relationships with a wide range of individuals in a variety of work settings;
  • Ability to advise or problem solve with students who may be hostile or frustrated;
  • Experience working in a remote setting
  • Experience providing customer or client service over the phone

Requirements:

What we're looking for:

  • Associate's Degree in finance, public administration, accounting, human resources, counseling; or a related field is required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Two years of student advising or customer service experience, required
  • Two years of processing financial aid experience, required
  • Experience in Military Tuition Assistance Program preferred
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Results-oriented and able to meet deadlines
  • Comfortable working independently in a remote environment
  • Related experience (such as bank loan officer, tax consultant, student records, counseling or admissions) may be substituted for up to one year of the required experience.
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience will be considered

Work Conditions/Physical Requirements*:

  • Ability to work in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, working from a monitor, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time.
  • Regular activities include moving around the office and walking to other departments throughout the building.
  • Occasional lifting required of up to 20 pounds.
  • Some travel will be required
