Position Summary:

Responsible for the technical execution and technical direction of multi-discipline engineering programs.

Responsible for the technical leadership and participation in proposal development, coordination of multi-disciplinary development teams, and risk management.

Ensures that final product meets full system specifications and requirements including transition to manufacturing

Strong communication, negotiation, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required.

Essential Accountabilities and Expected Results

Has the authority and responsibility to accomplish the following:

Identify, plan, and direct technical activities leading to new or improved products or processes that have significant impact on the company.

  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of technical system requirements and specifications, concepts, technical approaches, trade-off studies, detailed system designs, system integration and compliance test.
  • Understands and effectively applies sound technical directions to ensure consistent and clear understanding of the project's requirements, specifications and compliance approaches by all assigned personnel.
  • Oversee the design integration and validation process from proof of concept to product production transition ensuring technical performance, specification compliance and manufacturing producibility.
  • As needed, design and/or direct design of system architectures.
  • As needed, leverage commonality of design across programs to maximize efficiencies and minimize risk.
  • Ensure that system and sub-system or engineering level design reviews are held, results are documented, corrective actions taken, and integration and performance issues addressed. Leads the systems level reviews and participates in the sub-systems reviews as a challenger.
  • Ensures technical risks are understood and backup plans are developed, communicated and executed.

Additional Responsibilities and Deliverables

Ensures regular and effective technical communication with cross-functional development teams including manufacturing, customer service, purchasing, marketing, and sales, while maintaining an understanding of engineering project status, progress, risks, requirements and specifications. Ensures project specifications are traceable and compliant to product requirements.

  • Excellent decision making and written, presentation and verbal communication skills including tradeoffs decisions and listening, advising, influencing and gaining consensus for all technical aspects of the program. All decisions and communications are clear and concise.
  • The program manager is proactively kept informed of important developments and problems that require attention at a higher level in the organization to minimize surprises and potential delays.
  • As required, communicate with outside contract resources ensuring uniform understanding of the project's requirements, specifications and performance.

Develops, maintains and appropriately applies knowledge of the company's engineering, manufacturing, sales and marketing functions and companies tactical and strategic business activities.

Contributes to the development of intellectual proprietary positions including disclosures and patents.

Develops and mentors the proper awareness and use of the PDP and design tools and techniques including simulation, DOE, Six Sigma, etc.

Maintains awareness and understanding of external technologies that relate to the company.

Performs additional job-related responsibilities as scheduled or assigned.

Advises management and participates on the development and implementation of intellectual property deliverables.

Selection criteria to qualify for this position:

Bachelor's degree in engineering and ten years' experience, at least two of which should include project leadership and giving work direction to a multi-disciplined engineering team. A masters degree in engineering will qualify a candidate with less experience.

Possess a broad working knowledge and experience in the design, development, test, and manufacture of electromechanical systems.

Demonstrated leadership, communications, decision making and interpersonal skills, with a strong emphasis on the skill and ability to effectively guide product development projects.

Internal candidates without the above will need to satisfy criteria which include:

  • Job performance and scientific / engineering understanding and knowledge which is indistinguishable from experienced Systems Engineers.
  • Demonstrated frequent utilization of available inside and outside resources and a documented history of contributions such as the release of successful new products, product enhancements, Records of Invention, patents, awards, recognition, etc.
