About this position:
Context Labs is seeking a Principal Backend Engineer to help drive forward our product initiatives with our EdgeShare Platform and analytics spaces. Working as an integral leader within the development team, the engineer will lead many aspects of developing our “big data” systems, APIs, and related product capabilities; as well as provide thought leadership, upskilling of less senior engineers, and taking part in defining strategic linkages across the company’s products. This role will report to the VP, Engineering.
In this role you will:
- Provide leadership on the EdgeShare engineering team as a technical authority.
- Develop and maintain data systems and services for use within the Immutably™ Platform.
- Collaborate with other development teams and the product owner to define and estimate business requirements and then translate these into specific software tasks.
- Lead various projects utilizing a variety of languages, as appropriate (Java, Scala, Python, etc).
- Provide exemplary code, structure, design, etc. for the engineering team to use as guidelines.
- Document designs, architecture, code
- Conduct code reviews
- Lead technical talks on topics relating to large scale, performance, and “big data” systems and processes.
- Design and implement performant, scalable, and maintainable solutions.
- Collaborate as a member of an agile team to get products developed and completed with best-in-class software development.
- Coach and mentor members of your team through the variety of technological, and methodological challenges they face day-today.
- Coordinate across a distributed team spanning multiple time zones.
- Anything else as may reasonably be required by the company.
Experience & Skills:
- 12+ years of experience in “big data” systems development
- Great communication skills
- End-to-end understanding of modern application architectures
- Big picture orientation with strong attention to detail
- Comfort in working with and implementing highly abstract concepts and complex architectures
- Proficiency with one or more modern data processing systems – spark, flink, arrow, and related technologies.
- Proficiency with one or more modern process orchestration and scheduling systems such as Dolphin, Dagster, Airflow, and related technologies.
- Experience with large-scale query processing systems, ideally at the implementation level
- Experience with creating and managing large-scale machine learning processes
- Experience with JVM languages (including Scala) and Python
- Proficiency in unit and functional testing
- Experience with disparate Java frameworks such as Spring/Quarkus/Helidon etc.
- Proficiency with Docker based microservice architectures and the Kubernetes platform.
- Proficiency with MySQL, PostgreSQL, or equivalent RDBMS
- Experience with NoSQL/NewSQL databases.
- Proficiency in source code management
Preferred Experience:
- Experience with functional programming
- Experience with languages other than Java
- A bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field
