The Virginia Zoo, founded in 1901, is located in Norfolk, VA and is home to more than 700 animals representing over 150 species. It resides on 53 acres and is mostly outdoors with an indoor World of Reptiles exhibit, 3 classrooms, and an indoor restaurant and gift shop.


As an Events Assistant, you will be tasked with providing support for the Events department. The Virginia Zoo has a variety of events which requires this role to be involved in different types of tasks such as set up and break down of events, preparing supplies prior to an event, and assist the Events Manager and Events Coordinators guiding onsite vendors around the Virginia Zoo.


This is a part time, hourly non-exempt position. Reports to the Event Manager.


Duties/Responsibilities

  • Support the Events Manager with logistical and administrative support.
  • Assist events staff with set up and break down of events.
  • Assist vendors with providing access to Zoo and escorting to event set up locations.
  • Take direction from the Events Manager and Coordinators to ensure everything for the event is set up as required
  • Assist the Events Manager with communications to outside vendors and partners.
  • Provide support to internal staff by filling in where needed during events.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills; ability to think on your feet and remain flexible with changes
  • Willingness to pitch in as needed to make an event successful
  • Must work in a professional manner with Zoo visitors, clients, volunteers, and staff
  • Ability to maintain a positive attendance record and to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and evenings
  • Must possess a driver’s license in good standing and be able to drive a golf cart

Education and Experience:

  • Experience with site maps/plan-o-grams is a plus.
  • Experience working events is a plus.
  • Experience with working with 3rd party vendors is a plus


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, move, and walk for up to 8 hours a day.
  • Ability to lift and move boxes up to 30lbs.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
