Description

Position Overview

This engineering position will provide design-focused support and technical issue resolution for our battery module at Proterra. As a member of the New Product Development organization, the primary objective is to execute design solutions for new battery module platforms, release drawings, support engineering validation of new designs and proposed changes, and support change management functions. This role will primarily focus on the conceptualization and development of new module designs, with support through production launch.

About the Role You will:

  • Full product design responsibility, from concept through production launch and ramp.
  • Develop and optimize the design of complex parts and assemblies in 3D CAD software with associated CAE tools.
  • Deliver design specifications (dimensional, functional, performance, manufacturing) to defined schedules, through meticulous release of 2D part/assembly drawings.
  • Works cross-functionally to help define validation test plans and supporting documentation (test plans and DFMEA)
  • Develop new technologies and relentlessly strive to improve existing products.
  • Collaborate with the broader engineering team to provide DFA/DFM feedback and assist in the development of significant design specifications, FMEAs, DOEs, verification and validation protocols
  • Participate in sourcing and growing engineering relationships with suppliers to facilitate design-for-manufacturability (DFM) feedback and tool development.
  • Actively develop close relationships internally with cross-functional team members.
  • Provides technical mentorship and guidance within a small developing design team and able to manage a small team
  • Support sustaining engineering and operation teams on module troubleshooting and root cause analysis.

About You:

  • Effective time management and organizational skills; able to prioritize tasks and manage multiple priorities simultaneously, even with demanding workloads, various projects, and communication with overseas suppliers.
  • Willing to work flexible hours, passionate about getting jobs done, and open to changes
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Willing to challenge assumptions not supported by engineering analysis
  • Methodical and diligent thinker, with a high attention to detail and a desire to work with a strong sense of quality and craft.
  • Able to adapt interpersonal styles and techniques to communicate at all levels of the organization
  • Confident communicator with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Able to maintain strict confidentiality, establish trust and credibility, and act with complete integrity
  • Detail-oriented, resourceful, and diligent.

Your Experience Includes:

  • BS in Engineering (Mechanical Engineering preferred) or equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years of full-time design engineering experience in the automotive or transportation industries and contribution to more than 3 full product development cycles.
  • Proficient in 3D CAD design and 2D drafting (including GD&T) of mechanical components. 3DX experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of the full development cycle: design, development, test, manufacturing, and assembly operations required.
  • Hands-on experience in prototype builds and with DOEs for performance evaluation and hardware test and validation for battery module.
  • Experience with battery, EV powertrain, or high voltage systems required.
  • Experience with battery cell cooling methods, powder coating, and thermal interface required.
  • Experience with designing and analyzing high voltage/current joints (welded, bolted, etc.) required
  • Experience with designing for multiple forms of high-volume manufacturing methods, including die casting, extrusion, injection/compression molding, welding, stamping, etc. required.
  • Experience with battery cell electrical interconnect methods required.
  • Experience with low voltage wiring and/or flexible printed circuits preferred
  • Experience with methods of managing and mitigating battery thermal runaway preferred
