Position Summary: The Senior Accounting Specialist is a key member of the finance team, responsible for managing and overseeing various areas and processes within the accounting/finance function. This role involves maintaining accurate and complete financial records, ensuring timely processing of transactions, supporting the preparation of internal and external financial reports, analyzing financial data and trends, and providing insight to team members and leadership. The Senior Accounting Specialist will also assist with grants and investor compliance and evaluating organizational key performance indicators and metrics. 


Under direction of the Chief Financial Officer, the Senior Accounting Specialist will have an opportunity to contribute to the on-going improvement of accounting processes and procedures, including playing a key role in the adoption of innovative technology that drive improvements in efficiency and accuracy. The Senior Accounting Specialist position will also have an opportunity for future advancement to a controller-level position with 12-24 months. 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Assist in month-end closing by preparing month-end and quarter-end related journal entries and reconciliation of various general ledger accounts. 
  • Assist with year-end closing procedures and preparation for the annual audit. 
  • Prepare and analyze financial reports, including general ledger activity, balance sheets, and income statements. 
  • Responsible for the entire accounts payable process, ensuring that invoices are processed and paid in a timely and accurate manner.  
  • Ensure accurate and timely filing of tax forms related to accounts payable, such as 1099s. 
  • Allocate expenses to accounts and cost centers by analyzing expense reports and recording entries.  
  • Assist with cash flow management; preparing operating and lending cash forecasts with recommendations for transferring funds to meet near-term cash requirements; providing reports to management to assist in planning.  
  • Assist with preparing financial and other data for program and grant reporting. 
  • Assist with monthly preparation of departmental/program budgets and financial reports. 
  • Assist with long-term budgeting and forecasting process.  
  • Assist with creating/updating financial/accounting policies and procedures. 
  • Provide support during financial and tax audits by preparing records and documentation for auditors. 
  • Cross-train and provide surge capacity support for other accounting team members. 
  • Stay up-to-date on relevant accounting regulations and best practices for non-profit organizations.  
  • Assist with developing and maintaining internal controls and policies to ensure compliance with financial regulations and safeguard assets against fraud.  
  • Maintains professional competence in accounting principles and techniques; reviews and applies new or revised laws, regulations, and accounting standards.  
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.  

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong understanding of accounting principles (GAAP) and non-profit accounting standards. 
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • A high degree of emotional intelligence, with strong interpersonal communication and mediation skills to successfully collaborate and interface with diverse team members at all levels of the organization. 
  • Excellent organizational/time management skills with the ability to manage complex and highly confidential information exercising initiative and sound judgment/decision-making with a solution-oriented focus. 
  • Comfortable working independently with limited supervision. 
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel.  

 


TRAINING, EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: 


  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or relevant field OR 5-7 years direct work experience in lieu of a degree required 
  • 2-5 years of experience in accounting demonstrating increasing responsibility 
  • Experience with grant accounting and reporting (desirable, not required) 
  • Experience working in a CDFI or similar nonprofit (desirable, not required). 
  • Moderate digital literacy and ability to navigate workplace technology including enterprise level accounting software, payroll software, databases, and business intelligence.
