Biological Safety Manager

Overview:
The Biological Safety Manager ensures safe environments for biological research in labs by developing and implementing internal policies to manage work-associated risks. This role requires a thorough understanding of processes, hazards, training, monitoring, and risk management. The Biosafety Manager also ensures compliance with regulations governing the use, storage, and disposal of biological materials in laboratories.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage biosafety programs, including blood-borne pathogen exposure control, policy updates, and employee training.
- Ensure compliance with biosafety regulations and standards.
- Support and advise on Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) requirements and guidelines.
- Serve on the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
- Coordinate bio-waste management.
- Review purchase orders for specialized safety equipment.
- Develop and maintain databases or tools for biosafety programs.
- Create and disseminate guidelines on biological safety issues.
- Develop and maintain biological hygiene manuals.
- Collaborate with researchers and staff to implement biosafety practices tailored to specific biological hazards.
- Recommend appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) for laboratories.
- Perform laboratory inspections and provide guidance on risk assessment and biohazard containment.
- Conduct audits and inspections to ensure compliance with safety regulations.
- Provide assistance to other Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) specialists as needed.
- Offer guidance on laboratory equipment safety.
- Assist with the proper packaging and disposal of regulated medical waste and laboratory animal carcasses.
- Provide cross-training on biological safety topics to other EH&S staff.
- Develop and deliver training programs on biological safety procedures and protocols.
- Assist researchers with safety protocols for hazardous materials.
- Support departments with health and safety policies related to biological safety.
- Provide assessment and guidance for mold and fungal issues on campus.
- Assist with emergency planning for incidents involving biological hazards.
- Evaluate and prioritize current and future program needs.
- Maintain effective relations with campus personnel.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline.
- Two years of experience in a research environment, including active laboratory work in microbiology, molecular biology, chemistry, or organic chemistry.
- Strong interpersonal skills and effective verbal and written communication.
- Understanding of laboratory science safety, occupational safety, and risk assessments.
- Ability to wear a respirator.
Preferred:
- Master’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline.
- Five years of professional experience in a biosafety program within a research environment.
- Professional experience in laboratory science safety, occupational safety, and risk assessments.
- Experience providing training and instruction.
