Duties

As a Engineering Equipment Operator your duties will include but are not limited to the following:

The primary purpose of this position is to operate gasoline or diesel powered engineering and construction heavy equipment to complete a variety of Service Projects at various locations. Operators will operate a variety of types of heavy equipment to push, pull, pile, or load materials such as sand, gravel and earth while excavating, backfilling, grading, or leveling earth to specifications on such projects like repairing and breaking new ground for trails, roads, canals, tunnels, or construction sites. Heavy equipment may include: bulldozers, excavators, road graders, skid steers, backhoes, wheeled and tracked loaders, backhoes, wheeled equipment/vehicles, and specialized equipment. Implements may include: mowers, cutter bars, drum choppers, augers, plows, harrows, sprayers, discs, etc. Performs daily preventative maintenance and makes repairs and adjustments to equipment and attachments to equipment. This includes, but is not limited to, replacing chains and belts, cables, lubrication, and filter changes, battery checks, changing dozer teeth and safety inspections. Operator must follow safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations. Uses and assures proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing. Follows all federal and state rules when storing, using, handling, labeling, and disposing of hazardous materials in accordance with environmental standards. Keeps work area clean and orderly. Maintain, repair, or construct a variety of structures and surfaces of brick, block, stone, and other related materials; May perform limited assignments in the installation or repair of complex industrial electrical systems. This may include repairing or hooking up items such as outlets, switches, light fixtures, regulators, and circuit breakers. Performs habitat restoration and conservation tasks

Drug Testing Position: Selectees tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Commercial Driver’s License is required for this position. Driver’s License: Selectees will be required to possess and maintain a valid State driver's license at all times during their tenure. Uniform: Official U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uniform MAY be required. Trial Period: Selectees may be required to successfully complete a Trial period. Qualifications

By the closing date of this announcement, you must meet the requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Handbook X118C, Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupation.

Although no specific amount of experience, education or training is required, applicants must meet a minimum level of ability in relation to the position and the Assessment Questionnaire in order to be rated qualified for consideration. To be qualified candidates must meet any screen out element(s) listed at an "acceptable" level, and must achieve an average rating of at least "acceptable" on all of the elements. Only education, training, or experience acquired before the closing date of this announcement will be considered.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements.

The screen out element for this position is: Must be able to operate one or more types of heavy equipment on flat or rolling terrain, or construction sites with simple terrain problems, to push, pull, pile, or load materials such as sand, gravel, earth, or refuse. Must be able to maneuver the equipment into position and move it about in less confined areas. Must be able to perform minor maintenance/repair work to building, facilities, and equipment requiring basic use of hand and power tools. Must be able to follow instructions and specifications to accomplish work. Must be able to perform this work without more than normal supervision.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
