Key Responsibilities

As a Heavy Equipment Operator, your responsibilities will encompass the following:

  • The primary objective of this role is to operate various gasoline or diesel-powered engineering and construction machinery to execute a range of service projects across multiple sites.
  • Operators will manage different types of heavy machinery to push, pull, pile, or load materials such as sand, gravel, and earth while performing tasks like excavating, backfilling, grading, or leveling surfaces according to project specifications. Equipment may include bulldozers, excavators, road graders, skid steers, backhoes, and specialized machinery. Implements may consist of mowers, cutter bars, drum choppers, augers, plows, and more.
  • Conduct daily preventative maintenance and perform repairs and adjustments on equipment and attachments. This includes, but is not limited to, replacing chains and belts, lubricating parts, changing filters, checking batteries, and conducting safety inspections.
  • Adhere to safety protocols and procedures by following established safety regulations. Ensure proper use and fit of required safety gear and clothing. Comply with all federal and state guidelines regarding the storage, handling, labeling, and disposal of hazardous materials in line with environmental standards. Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Engage in the maintenance, repair, or construction of various structures and surfaces using materials such as brick, block, and stone. May involve limited tasks related to the installation or repair of complex industrial electrical systems, including outlets, switches, light fixtures, and circuit breakers.
  • Participate in habitat restoration and conservation efforts.

  • Drug Testing Position: Candidates selected for this role will be required to undergo urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  • A valid Commercial Driver's License is mandatory for this position.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid State driver's license is required throughout employment.
  • Uniform: An official U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uniform may be necessary.
  • Trial Period: Selected candidates may need to complete a trial period successfully.
  • Individuals assigned male at birth must be registered for the Selective Service.

Qualifications

By the closing date of this announcement, candidates must meet the requirements outlined in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Handbook X118C, Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupation. While no specific experience, education, or training is mandated, applicants must demonstrate a minimum level of ability related to the position and the Assessment Questionnaire to be rated qualified for consideration.

Screen-Out Element: Candidates will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen-out element, which typically appears as the first question in the online questionnaire. Those who meet the minimal acceptable qualification requirement will be considered for further evaluation; those who do not will be rated ineligible and eliminated.

Experience refers to both paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work through National Service programs and other organizations. All qualifying experience, including volunteer work, will be credited.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
