  • The Chemical Engineer will lead the design development and operation of a continuously operating labscale pilot for converting crude lithium chloride brines into batterygrade lithium carbonate using ReCRFT (Recrystallization Refinement Technology).
  • This role offers opportunities to contribute to future technology development projects.
Key Responsibilities: Pilot Plant Engineering Design and Development:
  • Design and iterate flow sheets for a ReCRFT lab pilot (20 50 L reactors).
  • Integrate OLI process modeling software into plant design.
  • Review and approve flow sheet designs before equipment purchases.
Equipment Purchasing Decisions:
  • Develop procurement specifications.
  • Source appropriate vendors considering economic and technical performance.
  • Reduce lead times for equipment delivery.
  • Collaborate with VP Chemistry Contract Services and finance team on equipment purchases.
Pilot Assembly and Commissioning:
  • Lead pilot plant assembly and integration for reactor vessels solvent and brine tanks and CO2 handling system.
  • Develop commissioning standards for operational and failure testing.
  • Conduct safety reviews and develop standard operating procedures.
Pilot Operations Maintenance and Upgrades:
  • Supervise and/or run ReCRFT using labscale testing conditions; adjust procedures based on scaledup system results.
  • Train additional personnel for pilot operation.
  • Verify ReCRFT for batch reactions develop designs for continuous operation and validate continuous operation.
  • Maintain pilot instrumentation and implement design upgrades.
Life Cycle Assessment and Engineering Studies:
  • Assist in developing LCA cost modeling and GHG reduction evaluations for ReCRFT.
  • Develop reports on full operation engineering including massflow calculations LCA findings cost modeling and GHG reduction estimates.
Technical Communication and Business Development Support:
  • Prepare research output presentations with clear data visualizations.
  • Write reports and white papers for both technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Communicate with potential licensing clients on technical aspects of ReCRFT for scaleup and deployment.
  • Integrate with computer science colleagues for data curation and visualization.
  • Experience with Python is an asset.
  • Support technical grant proposals for national and international grants.
  • Assist in preparing technical manuscripts for internal use or publication.
  • Participate in customer engagement activities and answer technical questions on ReCRFT technology.
Lab Safety: Comply with and support the clients safety protocols including:
  • Procedures for the use and disposal of chemical materials.
  • Environmental Management Plan.
  • Maintenance of safety records.
  • WHMIS UBC and other agencies as required.
Required Qualifications:
  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (chemistry chemical engineering mechanical engineering industrial engineering etc.)
  • 4 years of demonstrated work experience or a combination of education and work experience in chemistry or chemical engineering research and development.
  • Experience in designing and deploying chemical reaction systems and flowsheet development.
  • Experience with analytical chemistry instrumentation particularly for compositional analysis (FTIR IC ICP microscopy etc.)
  • Mechatronics engineering experience mechanical skills and software integration experience for lab instrumentation.
  • Effective communication style excellent public presentation skills and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work within a cooperative team environment and manage individual projects with minimal supervision.
  • Analytical assertiveness creativity and effective problemsolving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Programming experience is an asset.
