Responsible on a 24 hours basis, for organizing and managing Department activities for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing services for patients undergoing surgical procedures and for post-anesthesia patients. Assumes responsibility for other nursing areas on a coverage basis.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Manager, Clinical at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:
  • Plans/supervises patient care activities within OR rooms, perioperative suite. Ensures appropriate application of the nursing process and AORN standards, JCAHO & regulatory requirements as it relate to the perioperative patient. Ensures appropriate application of age-specific guidelines.
  • Coordinates care with surgeons and anesthesia providers, (including scheduling).
  • Assures the maintenance of adequate supplies/equipment and providing for their proper and economical use.
  • Provision of competent staff and supportive services adequately prepared to achieve quality patient care objectives. Responsible for human resource management in areas of responsibility.
  • Delegates responsibilities to professional nurses and assignment of duties to other patient care personnel, based on patient needs, assignments, competent staff.
  • Responsible for evaluating the performance of all departmental personnel and for assessing and continuously improving quality of care and services.
  • Provision of educational opportunities to increase knowledge and skills of all personnel, (orientation, inservice education, continuing education).
  • Coordination of Administrative duties to ensure proper functioning of staff.
  • Provision and fiscal control of material supplies and equipment.
  • Coordinates of activities between the perioperative environment and other departments including housekeeping and maintenance.
  • Creates an atmosphere that fosters teamwork and provides job satisfaction for all staff members.
  • Identifies problems and resolution of them in a decisive timely manner.
  • Initiates data collection and analysis to develop effective systems and to monitor efficiency and productivity.
  • Monitors quality of care provided in areas of responsibility; identifies opportunities for improvement, continually facilitates QA efforts. Reports all pertinent findings, issues and efforts to appropriate committees, and Administration.
  • Ensures maintenance of aseptic technique, sterility and adherence to infection control and CDC standards.
  • Displays an understanding of AORN standards
  • Markets perioperative services to surgeons and office staff through customer service initiatives.
  • Ensures delivery of excellent customer service resulting in positive and improving patient satisfaction scores for department and Medical Center.
  • Assures staff compliance with DOH and JCAHO standards. Assures staff preparedness for emergency care of patients; reviews cardiac arrest procedure and fire and disaster Manuals with the staff in the Department at least annually.
  • Informs the Director of Perioperative Services of issues relating to the OR and other Departments. Submits a monthly report.
  • Participates in the financial management of the Department by preparing the Operating Room, and Post-Anesthesia room budget, and by analyzing expenditures, including overtime hours accounted to the Department's cost centers.
  • Recommends improvement of facilities, purchase of new equipment, and changes in staffing based on knowledge of needs, resources, and current trends.
  • Maintains knowledge of performance testing and proper utilization of all special surgical equipment particularly emergency equipment contained within the Department.
  • Interprets hospital and departmental policies, objectives and procedures to nursing personnel.
  • Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • BSN
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in general medical/surgical nursing.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Operating Room.
Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
  • Master's Degree
  • Previous Operating Room management experience.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
  • CNOR
  • Current NJ Licensure
