The Staff Pharmacist plays a pivotal role in delivering thorough pharmaceutical care through effective medication management and clinical services, ensuring the safe and optimal use of medications. This position is accountable for the dispensing and monitoring of medication therapies in compliance with all relevant regulations and standards.

Key Responsibilities

A typical day for a Staff Pharmacist at Hackensack Meridian Health involves:

  • Ensuring compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations, as well as organizational policies regarding pharmaceutical care and medication management.
  • Reviewing and verifying all medications prior to dispensing, which includes assessing allergies, potential drug interactions, and clinical appropriateness, while communicating with healthcare providers as necessary.
  • Overseeing the dispensing process and maintaining accountability for controlled substances.
  • Managing investigational drugs where applicable.
  • Adhering to standards for sterile and nonsterile compounding and hazardous drugs as outlined by USP guidelines.
  • Supervising the activities of pharmacy technicians and support staff.
  • Implementing safe medication practices as recommended by relevant healthcare organizations.
  • Identifying and addressing the specific needs of the patient population, ensuring effective communication tailored to their understanding.
  • Providing drug information and responding to inquiries from healthcare professionals.
  • Engaging in clinical initiatives, including dose adjustments and stewardship programs, while being available for patient counseling.
  • Training pharmacy staff and residents in pharmacy practices and medication management resources.
  • Completing required competencies and maintaining licensure and certification.
  • Conducting inspections to ensure adherence to medication management standards.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned and upholding organizational standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Required Education and Skills:

  • Graduation from an ACPE accredited pharmacy school with at least a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy.

Preferred Experience:

  • 1-2 years of experience in a hospital pharmacy setting.
  • Familiarity with USP standards.
  • Experience with EPIC systems.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Must hold a valid NJ Registered Pharmacist license.
