The Staff Pharmacist plays a crucial role in delivering comprehensive pharmaceutical services through effective drug distribution and clinical interventions, ensuring the safe and optimal use of medications. This position entails the oversight of medication therapy management in compliance with all relevant regulations and standards.
Key Responsibilities
A typical day for a Staff Pharmacist at Hackensack Meridian Health involves:
- Adhering to and enforcing all applicable state and federal regulations as well as organizational policies related to pharmaceutical care and medication oversight.
- Conducting thorough reviews and verifications of all medications prior to dispensing, considering factors such as allergies, potential drug interactions, and clinical suitability. Communication with healthcare providers is essential when necessary.
- Overseeing the dispensing process, ensuring the security and accountability of controlled substances.
- Managing investigational drugs where applicable.
- Complying with USP standards for sterile and nonsterile compounding and hazardous medications.
- Supervising the activities of pharmacy support staff, including Technicians and Assistants.
- Implementing safe medication practices as recommended by recognized organizations and internal guidelines.
- Assessing the needs of diverse patient populations and tailoring care accordingly, ensuring effective communication with patients and caregivers.
- Providing drug information and support to other healthcare professionals through research and inquiry responses.
- Engaging in clinical pharmacy initiatives, including dose adjustments and stewardship programs, while being available for patient counseling.
- Training pharmacy staff and residents in various aspects of pharmacy practice and serving as a mentor for students and interns.
- Completing required competencies and maintaining licensure and certification.
- Conducting inspections to ensure compliance with medication management standards.
- Performing additional duties and projects as assigned.
- Upholding organizational standards of conduct.
Qualifications
Required Education and Skills:
- Graduation from an ACPE accredited pharmacy program with at least a Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy.
Preferred Experience:
- 1-2 years of experience in a hospital pharmacy setting.
- Familiarity with USP standards.
- Experience with EPIC software.
Licensure:
- Must hold a valid NJ Registered Pharmacist license.
