Duties and Responsibilities


The Internship is in the Education Outreach Section (EOS), which is part of the Outreach Division (OD) of the Department of Global Communications (DGC).

The EOS produces communications materials and organizes educational events to build long-term support for the mandated programmes of the United Nations Outreach Programme on the Transatlantic Slave Trade and Slavery, the Outreach Programme on the Holocaust and the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) initiative, that works with institutions of higher education.

The EOS provides guidance and support to Model United Nations simulations that engage students from around the world, helping them to learn about the principles and goals of the UN and organizes a youth event to commemorate the International Day of Peace.

The intern will support the EOS team by performing in-depth research on thematic issues, drafting background materials and official letters, documents, website, and social media copy, assisting with event organization, scheduling and other administrative tasks as assigned.

The internship is for a minimum period of four months with an opportunity for extension up to six months. The expected start date is 29 October. The internship is in-person, unpaid and full-time but could also be part-time.

When full time, interns work 35 hours, five days a week, and when part-time, they work less than 34 hours a week.

Interns work in the United Nations Headquarters in New York under the supervision of a UN staff member to which they are assigned.

The hybrid or remote setting of the internship may be considered based on request by the successful candidates. The internship is available for two candidates.

#Responsibilities# Working under the supervision of the Chief of Section, the intern will assist the EOS team with its daily tasks.


  • Conducting internet research on thematic issues
  • Monitoring inboxes of the programmes
  • Logistic support to in person events hosted by the Education Outreach Section
  • Assisting with planning and organization of events, including researching speakers, preparing invitations and promotional material
  • Maintaining the databases for the EOS section
  • Providing general office support (processing, drafting and finalizing correspondence and other communications; setting up and maintaining files/records, organizing meetings etc.
  • Other ad hoc tasks when necessary and required

Qualifications/special skills


Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent) in journalism, communication, media studies, filmmaking, international relations or related field 1.

Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience.

However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.

Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master's or Ph.

D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor's, Master's or PH.D. Programme.

Languages

English and French are working languages of the UN Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
