General Summary:

This role involves expert medical analysis of claims files (or underwriting applications) across Unum US product lines.

The Medical Consultant delivers high-quality, timely, and efficient medical consultative services to the Benefits Center, following all regulatory and internal standards.

They are expected to provide excellent customer service, liaise with business partners, and interact with health care providers and specialized resources.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide clear medical direction and opinions with forensic analysis
  • Collaborate with fellow medical consultants for comprehensive analysis
  • Apply medical knowledge to determine functional capacity
  • Offer medical education to others as needed
  • Communicate with healthcare providers for medical information
  • Make referrals for second opinion reviews when required
  • Manage high volumes of work effectively and efficiently
  • Maintain good turnaround times and operate with urgency
  • Focus on team success in addition to individual workload
  • Receive and act on feedback appropriately
  • Perform other assigned duties
Job Specifications:
  • Professional Degree (MD, DO, PhD, PsyD)
  • Board Certification in Psychiatry required
  • Active, unrestricted US medical license
  • Minimum five years of clinical experience
  • Strong team and collaborative skills
  • Ability to mentor and provide constructive feedback
