National Grid is hiring a Group Engineering Lead Engineer. This is a hybrid position which can be based out of any of our offices located in the US.

Job Purpose

Reporting to the Director, Group Strategic Engineering (Band C), the Engineering Initiative / Project Lead role is responsible for supporting the Group Chief Engineer function in driving and providing thought-leadership and a groupwide view across a number of engineering outcomes and key strategic engineering initiatives. The role supports the Director, Group Strategic Engineering and Group Chief Engineer across a broad remit of group engineering improvement activities, including but not limited to:

• [1] strategic engineering (climate adaption and key net zero challenges)

• [2] engineering delivery

• [3] enhancing National Grid's engineering ambassadorial role and advocacy positions as a leader in net zero.

This role works closely with the US and UK Engineering Initiatives lead to ensure all National Grid regions and technology areas are included in the delivery of the GCE Engineering outcomes.

Key Accountabilities

Provide oversight and drive the delivery of key strategic programs to advance National Grid's achievement against engineering outcomes, working in a range of capacities including as a program lead, subject matter expert, or as a critical-role ensuring a group-wide view. Covering topics including but not limited to:

• Climate Change Resilience – develop future scenarios to aid the Board in understanding climate adaption options whilst integrating into challenging net-zero planning and timescales.

• Engineering Delivery – advance our engineering assurance to achieve greater efficiencies in the delivery of capital investments. This will include horizon scanning and technical assessment of disruptive or emergent risks/opportunities.

• New Engineering Solutions – develop new long-term solutions that will help the delivery of net zero. Set up and identify the value in innovative engineering solutions, using opportunities and concepts identified with NGP and external parties, that result in implementation within Business Units.

• Strategic Engineering- provide external influence with professional bodies to further our engineering ambition and net zero outcomes in the US. Provide technical leadership to group and US Strategy and align positions and ambition.

• Our Reputation – increasing National Grid's Group's external regard in the US and UK through inspiring campaigns and continually developing relationships with relevant global professional bodies, along with the outcomes and stakeholder manager.

• Support the Director, Group Strategic Engineering, and the Group Chief Engineer to develop and maintain the group engineering framework and associated policies

• Work with Business Units in an agile and highly networked way to ensure best practice and lessons learned are leveraged across the group on relevant engineering matters associated with outcomes.

• Play an active role in communities of practice around key strategic engineering topics/ outcomes to ensure knowledge sharing, innovation, continuous improvement, and ensuring there is joined-up group thinking across National Grid's Business Units and functions.

• Provide technical expertise to input into the maintenance and futureproofing of National Grid's group engineering framework.

• Be the thought leader and point of assimilation for assigned engineering outcomes, and working with Director, Group Strategic Engineering and Group Chief Engineer to provide technical input to material that informs the Group Exec and Board on the importance of this topic.

• Undertake other duties such as reporting, project management, research, and analysis on the behalf of the Group Engineering Policy Manager and Group Chief Engineer as requested.

• Drive improvement through developing and deploying new approaches to management, process, and systems. Working with the wider Group Chief Engineer team and colleagues across the business to influence to provide solutions to complex problems and identifying areas for improvement.

• Input into the refresh of engineering outcomes on a continual basis to define and then manage a set of improvement projects which impact the breadth of National Grid Group to deliver improvement and engineering compliance.

Requirements


• Understand the evolving role of National Grid and how the business operates.

• Understand the US energy sector in terms of structure, regulatory environment and the short- and long-term issues affecting the industry and join with expertise from the UK Engineering initiative lead to create a group view.

• A strong track record of delivery, performance and continuous improvement is essential, given the multi-faceted and challenging nature of this role.

• Strong networking, stakeholder management and influencing skills, demonstrated through a track record in current or previous roles.

• Excellent written and communication skills delivered in a timely manner are essential for this position.

• Openness and flexibility to change, the ability to work to tight deadlines, comfortable with ambiguity and genuinely tenacious.

• Ability to think in a structured way and lead business performance initiatives.

• Ability to assimilate large amounts of data in order to draw out the salient points in a way which supports business decision making.

Upstate NY: $124k - $146k a year

Downstate NY: $150k - $176k a year

New England: $139k - $164k a year
