Job Summary


The Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) is seeking a highly motivated, professional Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) to contribute to the diversity and excellence of our department and to assist the faculty and staff of our fast-paced research center.

The CCTS supports campus research professionals to ensure they are able to meet their research goals and ultimately improve the health of our communities and populations.

Since its inception in 2006, the CCTS has invested millions of dollars into research funding and trainee support at the University of Kentucky through its commitment to funding innovative, early stage translational research.

The CCTS's vision is to catalyze clinical and translational discoveries through an integrated and transformative research environment targeting improved health, with emphasis on underrepresented populations in Kentucky.

In support of that vision, the Chief Scientific Officer role will be responsible for extending the portfolio of research and increase infrastructure funding and resources for the CCTS.


Responsibilities for this position include grant development, process improvement, and introduction of new tools and approaches to accelerate research and expand the grant funding repertoire of the campus.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in both clinical and translational science, as well as extensive senior level research administration experience.

The CSO must have deep knowledge of all aspects of clinical research at a top tier research university to interface effectively with campus-wide administrative units and colleges.

The role will require conducting collaborative evaluations and implementation of cross-cutting solutions and resources. The CSO will also represent the CCTS in outreach to the campus and in presentation opportunities.


Successful candidates will participate in setting and implementing research strategy and priorities for the CCTS, guide and oversee effectiveness of cross-cutting teams related to service to investigators, research development, special populations, and community engagement, guides and oversees effectiveness of cross-cutting teams related to service to investigators, research development, special populations, and community engagement.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

Distinguished record in research leadership including research development and mentoring.

Clear understanding of NIH research priorities with a particular focus on NCATS strategic plan

Ability to adapt and thrive in a fast-paced research environment.

Comprehensive knowledge of the research process at a top tier research university.


Strong track record of broad clinical research support with knowledge of all facets of the research process from protocol development, regulatory, statistics and community/participant engagement and recruitment, etc.

Preferred Education/Experience

Minimum of 10 years clinical and translational research experience.

Minimum of 5+ years of senior level research administration experience.
