General Summary of Position
Ensures a safe environment for our patients, staff and visitors. Patrols hospital property, responds to calls for assistance, and reports on conditions, objects or persons which may impact the security and/or safety of patients, associates, physicians, visitors, or vendors, and responds according to established policies, procedures and regulations. Mentors and trains security staff. Assumes charge role as needed. Security Officers are essential associates in a 24/7 environment and may be required to be flexible with scheduling and work "off-shifts." May obtain and maintain State of Maryland and/or District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department Special Police Officer commission to carry out duties associated with crime control and response, designated as an Unarmed Security Officer, assigned and deployed within the hospital consistent with the limitations of the Unarmed SPO commission from Maryland State Police or District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Minimum Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required or
- equivalent. required and
- Associate's degree preferred
Experience
- 1-2 years SPO commissioned and 1 year of Medstar satisfactory performance as a Security Officer I required or
- 5-7 years Total related security or law enforcement experience (inside or outside of medstar). required
Licenses and Certifications
- DL NUMBER - Driver License, Valid and in State (DRLIC) Valid driver's license. required and
- MD Special Police Commission - MDSPC Commissioned as a Special Police Officer by the State of Maryland State Police and/or District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department preferred and
- Special Police Officer - DC - SPO Commissioned as a Special Police Officer by the State of Maryland State Police and/or District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department preferred and
- If SPO, must satisfy ongoing training requirements to maintain SPO commission in Maryland and/or DC required and
- IAHSS - Certification As A Security Officer Basic or Advanced Certified Healthcare Security Officer (CHSO) certification from IAHSS preferred and
- BLS - Basic Life Support BLS (CPR) certification required within 60 days of start date. required and
- Must successfully complete all MedStar initial training related to violence prevention, de-escalation and crisis prevention intervention. required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm and thoughtful during a crisis.
- Ability to assist in de-escalating situations with strong emotions and conflict.
- Basic computer skills preferred.
