KBR is looking for a Senior Lead Mechanical Technician to provide specialized support for spaceflight instruments at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). Position is full-time on-site at NRL in SE Washington, DC. Support entails direct and oversight of mechanical technicians for hardware development, processing, assembly, integration, and testing with both flight and non-flight space science instrument systems. Hardware includes structures, mechanisms, optics, and spaceflight cameras. Support includes hands-on experience with full instrument assembly within cleanroom environment and may involve payload integration with the spacecraft. Further support for verification and environmental testing is expected. The candidate will also participate as a team member in processing hardware for preparation for mechanical testing including vibration, static load, shock, and TVAC testing.

The candidate must have proven experience in hardware processing tasks requiring hands-on part processing and assembly, understanding of requirements and regulations of hardware builds, patience skills, and the proven ability to work with quality assurance. Prior experience working oversight with less experienced mechanical technicians is required. Experience with spaceflight bonding techniques is required. The candidate must be a self-starter with good communication skills to express ideas and opinions, dependable, detail oriented, and work well on a team. The candidate must have the ability to recognize mechanical issues and independently develop solutions that minimizes schedule and cost impacts. Candidate must be familiar with the MS Office Suite. Specific duties shall include:

  • Perform mechanical part processing and assembly under the direction of the engineer(s) in charge that includes making dimensional measurements, aligning mechanical structures, and inspecting mechanical piece-parts prior to and after assembly.
  • Use simple shop tools to fabricate/construct fittings and jigs such as table saws, grinders/sanders, and drills.
  • Interpret mechanical drawings.
  • Perform tasks with minimal supervision and provide oversight to less experienced mechanical technicians.


Level of Education/Experience:

  • High school diploma and at least 15 years of relevant experience.

Required Skills/Training:

  • A high level of manual dexterity, including the ability to handle and control small parts during critical assembly, disassembly, and cleaning processes is required.
  • Must retain demonstrated ability to perform to high-quality workmanship standards and display attention to detail in following procedures.
  • A proven track record working in compliance with applicable Quality Assurance (QA), Safety, Health and Environmental plans, policies, and procedures is important.

Desired Education, Experience, Skills or Training:

  • Training and/or certifications associated to mechanical technicians supporting NASA related projects.
  • Experience building, testing, and handling space flight hardware is highly desired.
  • Experience in a shop environment, fabricating mechanical parts using standard shop equipment, is a plus.

Basic Compensation:

$43.22 per hour - $60.82 per hour

The offered rate will be based on the selected candidate's working location, knowledge, skills, abilities and/or experience and in consideration of internal parity.

Additional Compensation:

KBR may offer bonuses, commissions, or other forms of compensation to certain job titles or levels, per internal policy or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be in the form of sign on bonus, relocation benefits, short term incentives, long term incentives, or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
