Detailed Job Description

The primary purpose of this position is to develop, organize and provide in-depth training, mentoring, guidance, professional development and evaluation for K-12 teachers of the deaf, with a focus on STEM education. This may also include graduate students in teacher preparation programs for the deaf. This position will promote understanding about opportunities for DHH individuals in STEM careers among middle and high school students, teachers, counselors, and vocational rehabilitation (VR) counselors. We recognize the need to improve the instructional and technical skills of high school teachers in STEM areas.

This position will focus on activities such as establishing, expanding, and improving pathways for DHH students to transition from high school to associate degrees, to baccalaureate degrees, and beyond in STEM areas. We also need strategies for access to learning for DHH students who may be in mainstream classes, with or without support and access services.

This position may also teach courses and/or lead professional development activities related to Deaf STEM Education.

This position will report to the Department Chair in the Master of Science in Secondary Education, but will work very closely with the NTID Regional STEM Center. Through this work, they will work with multiple departments both on NTID Campus and their satellite locations.
Some travel will be required. This position also anticipates some evening and weekend hours if applicable.
The goal is to increase STEM learning and teaching opportunities. This is a non-tenure track position.
This will be a 12 month position. This position will start August 2024.
This position ends on May 31st, 2029, but can be renewed for one more 5 year term.
Major Accountabilities
Develop and execute the vision and mission for growth of the NTID Regional STEM Center (NRSC) with an emphasis on STEM K-12 teacher education and outreach, contributing to the pipeline of DHH middle school and high school students to RIT/NTID.
Collect STEM educational data, do analysis and provide reports in the area of K-12 teacher preparation and training.
Collaborate with NTID departments and units on STEM-related and teacher training/ preparation initiatives, with a particular focus on a partnership with the Master of Science Program in Secondary Education of the Deaf at NTID.
Represent NRSC and pertinent NTID departments at conferences and related programs for the purpose of promoting NTID and NRSC programs. As appropriate, conduct presentations on STEM topics, programs and resources.
Teach courses if applicable.
Participate in both departments, center, and institute committees and activities
Participate in professional organizations and professional development activities regarding teacher education and supervision
Other duties as assigned by NRSC Director/MSSE Department Chair

The National Technical Institute for the Deaf web page is located at and the Department of Master of Science in Secondary Education (MSSE) web page is located at The MS program in Secondary Education of Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing is designed for students to earn dual certification to teach a secondary school content area for students who are hearing or deaf as well as in deaf education for grades K-12. The curriculum is taught by renowned faculty at RIT—one of the most innovative campuses in the world—serving more than 1,100 deaf and hard-of-hearing students.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Earned master's degree in education of the deaf or relevant field or have demonstrated in widely recognized ways special competence in the field
Required to have 10+ years of experience in the area of deaf education, preferably in Science or Math fields.
Experience in mentoring teachers.
Certification in teaching deaf and hard-of-hearing K-12 students.
Prior experience teaching deaf students is required: teaching deaf and hard-of-hearing students at the primary, secondary or postsecondary level is required
Additional expertise and interest in one or more of the following areas are desired: language development of deaf people, educational change, curriculum studies, history and philosophy of education, cognition, theories of teaching and learning, and history/legal aspects of the education of deaf and hard-of-hearing students
Demonstrated proficiency in sign language and knowledge of Deaf culture
