Job Responsibilities/Duties

Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) manages one of the most challenging radioactive waste cleanup projects in the country. Our focus is reducing the environmental risk posed by 56 million gallons of radioactive and chemical waste stored in 177 underground tanks on the Hanford Site located in Richland, WA. The Environmental Specialist position will provide support of regulatory inspections by acting as a back-up or at times lead Inspection Coordinator. Position will support implementation of Environmental Protection training with emphasis on obtaining trainer qualification. Qualified candidate will have ability to manage multiple tasks, be a self-starter, execute complex, business-sensitive duties with discretion interfacing across all levels of the team and other project organizations.

Responsibilities of the Environmental Specialist include, but are not limited to following activities:

  • Support the WRPS Environmental Protection Training program and training lead.
  • Perform administrative functions related to inspections by agencies including document requests, document clearance processing and tracking.
  • Serve as a secondary inspection coordinator, or primary when requested, as well as providing back-up and support to the company's overall compliance inspection and external agency visit program, processes, and requirements.
  • Support the Environmental Protection Department's corrective action program, reports, and associated requirements.
  • As needed, create, review/comment and/or at times approve, various technical documents, work instructions/packages, and procedures.
  • Upon request, provide support, including in the field and posted radiological zones, to WRPS' internal assessment program and requirements, compliance, and other programmatic aspects. This may require the donning of personal protective equipment appropriate for the hazards (e.g., respiratory equipment, anti-contamination clothing, safety glasses, and footwear).
  • Obtain and then must maintain all required certifications, training, medical, and qualifications necessary to performing assigned work scope.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or delegated by management commensurate with training and qualifications.

Required Qualifications

Grade 15:

BA/BS Degree in related discipline;

One (1) year relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Grade 16 :

BA/BS Degree in related discipline;

Two (2) years relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

-Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is larger, and the expected level of performance is increased.

Grade 17:

BA/BS Degree in related discipline;

Five (5) years relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

-Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is significantly larger, and the expected level of performance is greatly increased.

Desired Qualifications

  • Knowledge of radioactive and mixed waste practices and requirements, (e.g., Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Toxic Substances Control Act, etc.).
  • Experience with environmental regulatory agencies and compliance inspections.
  • Experience teaching, educating, training, or otherwise mentoring,
  • Strong communication skills. Must be able to communicate with multiple disciplines (Operations, Project Management, Construction, Engineering, DOE, EPA, and State Regulatory Agencies), peers, and management.
  • Demonstrate an ability to be a team player.
  • Good writing and note taking skills.
  • Hazardous Waste worker qualifications
  • Radiological worker qualifications.

Grade 15:

Hiring Range Minimum: $78,338

Hiring Range Maximum: $98,813

Grade 16:

Hiring Range Minimum: $86,138

Hiring Range Maximum: $108,513

Grade 17:

Hiring Range Minimum: $94,650

In accordance with the company's philosophy on compensation for exempt and salaried non-exempt employees, WRPS takes into consideration a variety of factors when determining initial salary to include assigned job scope and responsibility, a candidate's qualifications as compared to internal comparators performing in a similar role, and the external labor market. A salary offer will be made within the targeted hiring range posted. Note a candidate's prior salary history will not be taken into consideration.
