Position Overview

To assist the Rail Manager in managing the value flow of materials from production to rail, and to commercial sale both internally and externally. This is accomplished by managing the movement of material with a focus on total flow through margin to make decisions and coordinate action. These decisions are made with consideration to plant capabilities, product requirements, schedules, inventories, logistics and service areas. The position also ensures adequate supply of product available to meet customers' needs, lower costs and maximize profit and coordinates sales forecasts and production schedules with appropriate line of business leader and other members of the commercial team. The Assistant Rail Manager will report directly to the Rail Manager.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Internal Relationships – Build in-depth knowledge of Shelly's business and strategy with strong relationships across the group
  • Production Capabilities and Schedules – Clearly understand the short- and long-term production capabilities and flexibility of the various plants (aggregate, asphalt and ready-mix), from blends to mix designs.
  • Rail Logistics- Understand rail logistics and cost flow of rail service and business.
  • Rail Metrics – Compile and assist with data collection for weekly rail metrics report
  • Inventory – Monitor present and future inventories, critical products (both long and short), and coordinate requirements and changes with sales and operations
  • Schedule – In conjunction with sales and operations teams, maintain short- and long-term schedules, for customers (internal and external), to feed DF3 (maintained by sales team)
  • Sourcing – Manage day to day sourcing of rail, plants and customers (internal and external) in conjunction with material orders team and operations
  • Customer Relationships – Build and maintain strong relationship with key rail customers and maintain knowledge of customer preferences to ensure Shelly is considered their primary supplier.
  • Performance improvement – Identify and implement business changes (with appropriate LOB leader) to maximize profit, beginning with sourcing and scheduling of materials and continuing through product balance efforts and new account management decisions for smart growth.
  • Regular review of DF3 with sales and operations teams, focused on improving accuracy, communication of short- and long-term requirements and identification of any potential conflicts or concerns
  • Review approved quotes to confirm, or possibly amend, sourcing and inventory selection
  • Communicate any proposed changes to quotes to VP Sales and/or sales rep
  • Manage the material orders, dispatch and related functions
  • Review Daily Orders and Schedules, pre- and post-delivery to confirm, or possibly amend, sourcing and inventory selection
  • Communicate any proposed changes to schedule to VP Sales, operations, sales rep and material orders team
  • Coordinate and review sourcing of asphalt, aggregates, aggregate blends, long products with sales, material orders and operations teams
  • Hold operations meetings and coordinate with sales meetings to ensure direction is understood and communicated back and forth between teams
  • Identify and implement cost reduction, cash flow (TWC) and profit improvement proposals with sales and operations teams
  • Become a certified conductor and engineer – willing to assist with unloading duties and maintenance
  • Other duties as may be assigned

  • Report to the assigned job site ready to begin work at the designated start time.

  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the company policies, procedures, and applicable laws.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree or equivalent from four-year college or technical school; or three to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Proficient with Windows, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

The employee must regularly lift and/or move more than 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions and is regularly exposed to wet, humid condition airborne particles, and extreme heat or cold. The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is frequently very loud and may require protective equipment
