POSITION TITLE: Education & Youth Activities Assistant

STATUS: Full-Time Non-Exempt

DIRECT SUPERVISOR: Education & Youth Activities director

SALARY: $22.00 per hour

MISSION STATEMENT:

QUALIFICATIONS
  1. A possessor of a positive Christian experience who is willing and able to share it.
  2. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age.
  3. Applicants must be in compliance with the child protection policies of The Salvation Army.
  4. An understanding and acceptance of The Salvation Army's mission, philosophy, program, and practices.
  5. HS Diploma or GED required. Some college and/or degree preferred. On the job experience may be substituted for educational requirements.
  6. Two years of experience teaching or working with children in an educational development environment.
  7. Tutor Program experience is strongly recommended, with emphasis on planning and scheduling.
  8. Ability to plan, direct, and evaluate the work of subordinates.
  9. Ability to work independently or with other staff members.
  10. Ability to keep calm in demanding situations.
  11. Multi-media, first aid card, and current CPR certification or willing to obtain one within 90 days from hire.
  12. Must have the ability to obtain a Washington State Commercial Driver License (Class A) within 90 days of hire (in some instances, a Class B or C will be required).
  13. Applicants must have experience working with volunteers and employees in either a team or supervisory role.
  14. Demonstrate leadership ability.
  15. Love and appreciation of children.
  16. Able to work under the restrictions of a monthly budget, as well as prepare an annual budget under the guidance of your immediate supervisor and Corps Officers.
SCOPE OF POSITION:

  1. Responsible for assisting with the development, registration, recruitment, and teaching of the Afterschool center, Mid-Winter Day Camp, Spring Day Camp, Summer Day Camp, and Computer Learning Center.
  2. Responsible for the business, as well as the development, of all functions and programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administrative Duties

  1. Schedule and conduct quarterly program planning and evaluation meetings with the Education and Activities Director.
  2. Assist with recruiting and training volunteers for educational programs.
  3. Assist in conducting staff meetings, calendar planning, and other administrative duties.
Program Development

  1. Plan activities, curriculum, calendar, and individual learning plans.
  2. Assist in coordinating the After-School Center's use of the gym, game room, etc., with the Community Center Director.
  3. Assist the Director with staff development, program development, and parent communication.
  4. Assist the Director with developing relationships with the local schools, community centers, after-school programs, and youth programs to enhance the SAY Troops program for both our after-school program and summer camp.
  5. Any other program-related task that the Education & Activities Director may need to have done.
Business Details

  1. Maintain a complete enrollment sheet for each student showing days of participation and topics studied.
  2. Coordinate any need for driver and vehicle with the Program Manager.
  3. Any other business items that may arise in connection with the After-School Center Program, Day Camp, and Computer Learning Center.
Facility and Equipment Maintenance

  1. Be sure the facility is ready for the After-School Center Program prior to 2:00 p.m. and ensure that all materials are put away after 5:00 p.m.
  2. Maintain all bulletin boards, posters, and pictures for the After-School Center Program.
  3. Maintain the After-School Center and Computer Learning Center inventory up to date with the original to be kept in the Corps Community Center Master File.
  4. Notify the Property and Maintenance Manager of repairs or special janitorial needs.
Day Camp Responsibilities

  1. Assist with the registration for Day Camp.
  2. Organize and run all field trips and educational activities for Day Camp.
  3. Set up and organized the Summer Sack Lunch program for Day Camp.
  4. Keep all statistics for the Summer Sack Lunch program.
  5. Assist with supervising Day Camp staff, including assigning duties, scheduling breaks, weekly staff schedules, and orientations.
  6. Interview and assist in the selection of temporary Day Camp staff members.
  7. Do flyers and mailings for the Homework Center, Day Camp, and Computer Learning Center.
  8. Arrange all PR with the school district for Community Center programs.
Computer Learning Center Responsibilities

  1. Oversee the Computer Learning Center, including scheduling, programming, and equipment security.
  2. Arrange for repairs and maintenance of equipment.
  3. Plan curriculum for Computer Center, including educational software and educational websites.
Christmas Responsibilities

  1. Assist with Kettle driving, pick-up, and drop-off of workers and kettles.
  2. Assist with Christmas Assistance sign-ups, if needed.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis
  2. Ability to grasp, push, and pull objects such as files file cabinet drawers and reach overhead
  3. Ability to use hand to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls;
  4. Ability to operate a telephone
  5. Ability to operate a desktop or laptop computer
  6. Ability to lift 20 lbs.
  7. Ability to access and produce information from a computer
  8. Ability to understand written information
  9. Ability to operate a motor vehicle
Qualified individuals must be able to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation. Health Insurance: Low bi-weekly premiums for employee-only coverage, Kaiser HMO for those residing in a Kaiser service area, Anthem EPO/PPO is available for those residing outside a Kaiser service area. Voluntary +1 and +family coverage at additional cost. Delta Dental DHMO and DPPO dental insurance are offered.

Life and Voluntary Options. An employer-paid life insurance policy covers employees. Voluntary supplemental life, short-term and long-term disability plans are available.

Retirement Plans: Employer-funded Money Purchase Pension Plan (Defined Contribution Plan) 50% vested at five years eligible service time. Plus, an employee-funded voluntary 403(b) option.

Parental Leave: The benefit is 40 hours of Paid Leave for qualifying events.

Sick Leave: 12 days of Sick Leave annually accruing from day one, eligible for use after three months' service time.

Paid Vacation:
  • Two weeks annually, accruing from day one, for non-exempt positions.
  • Four weeks annually, accruing from day one, for exempt positions.
  • Accrued vacation is eligible for use after six months' service time.
Paid Holidays: 13 designated holidays + 1 floating holiday per year
