Essential Job Duties:

This is an internship for the Zoo and Exotic Animal Medicine program housed in the Exotic Animal Medicine Service.

Training and mentoring will primarily take place in the Exotic Animal Medicine Service at North Carolina State University's College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), but may also include off and on-site rotations, training, and field service visits (i.e. local private collections, and other partner institutions). Supplementary training will occur within the CVM as well as at the North Carolina Zoo and our coastal facility (CMAST).

Duties and Responsibilities

The intern will act as a clinician-in-training within the Exotic Animal Medicine Service. The selected candidate will:

1. Provide high quality effective and efficient patient care for a variety of zoo and exotic animal species. Clinical responsibilities will entail all the duties associated with case management: client communication, development and implementation of a diagnostic and treatment plan, interpretation of diagnostic findings, surgery, post-operative care, development of a home care plan, and fiscally responsible management – all with appropriate level of faculty guidance and mentorship. The individual will participate in the emergency roster and emergency patient care.

2. Provide high quality teaching for veterinary students in clinical rotations, and assist faculty with teaching selectives, electives, and core DVM course labs, as requested. Interns are required to give one 30 minute presentation during the House Officer Seminar series.

3. Contribute to and assist in clinical research projects. This internship will prepare the successful candidate for a zoological or zoological companion animal residency or a zoological companion animal job.

4. The intern is encouraged to complete a research project and submit it for publication during the time they are in the internship.

5. Expectations of Position: 1. Work Week: scheduled 40 hours per week, holidays, weekends, and on-call. The work week will include shared emergency duties (in addition to the 40 hours). The majority of the time will be within the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine Exotic Animal Medicine Service (10 months), but will have out rotations within the CVM (1 month) as well as at the North Carolina Zoo and coastal facility (CMAST) for zoo and aquatic medicine rotations (1 month). 2. The intern will be encouraged to complete one publication for submission to an appropriate scientific journal. This can be based on a clinical case study, primary hypothesis driven research, data mining, or other project. This project and/ or publication will require time committed outside of the assigned work schedule unless other arrangements are made.
