ABOUT THE COMMUNITY LEARNING CENTER:

The Community Learning Center (CLC) empowers a diverse community of adult learners to transform their lives and realize their potential through education, skills development, and community participation. Learners are predominantly low-income Cambridge residents and come from a variety of ethnic, linguistic, and racial backgrounds. They are enrolled in English classes or Adult Education for high school equivalency, employment training, or preparation for college. Classes meet 2-3 mornings per week or 2 evenings per week. ABOUT THE ROLE:

The ESOL Teacher/Assessment Coordinator manages standardized testing for students in our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes. Their role is pivotal to our grant performance as monitored by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). They reference MA assessment policies, monitor learner attendance and progress, and maintain practices for administering and scoring multiple assessments annually. They will also teach a core ESOL class 6 hours a week to a group of adult ESOL learners. They collaborate frequently with other teachers, advisors, as well as a team of staff administering assessments and entering and analyzing data for the program. The ideal candidate is a strong teacher, with excellent technology, organizational and communication skills, and a collaborative work style. This is an 11-month per year permanent position with salary paid over 12 months.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESOL Teacher

  • Dynamically teach an ESOL class to adult learners, whether in person, hybrid, or online, depending on program needs
  • Provide scaffolded, explicit instruction, practice, and assessment in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and digital literacy to help students achieve personal, career, and college goals
  • Communicate regularly with class advisor and individual learners
  • Maintain class attendance and learner conference reports
  • Work as a team with other teachers to develop materials, lessons, and share best practices
  • Actively participate in the Department of Human Service Program's Race and Equity Initiative

Assessment Coordinator

  • Develop practices and monitor CLC compliance with DESE assessment policies
  • Maintain live records of learner attended hours and time elapsed between assessments
  • Organize assessment calendars and staffing
  • Delegate tasks and support the work of the PT assessment assistant
  • Produce and analyze assessment reports
  • Administer standardized assessments
  • Work as a team to uplift a positive assessment experience for learners while maintaining compliance

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Experience and Education

  • Experience teaching ESOL, along with knowledge of methods and materials used in ESOL instruction
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong organizational skills with a keen attention to detail, timelines, and deadlines
  • Strong technology skills and familiarity with using spreadsheets
  • Sensitivity to the needs of the adult learner population
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • A commitment to racial equity and a desire to understand and interrupt systemic racism and other forms of oppression.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, WORKING CONDITIONS, WORK FLEXIBILITY AND ACCOMODATIONS

  • General office and classroom environment with air conditioning and fluorescent lighting; work to be performed onsite.
  • Job requires regular evening and day work
  • There is extensive computer use. Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to lift and carry up to ten pounds of books and papers
  • Ability to answer phones and maintain multiple files
  • Ability to travel to meetings within the city
  • This position may be eligible for hybrid work under the City's Telework Policy depending on operational needs
