An Overview

Do you enjoy working with the community? Consider joining the Alexandria Police Department, providing first class customer service. The Alexandria Police Department strongly invests in the community. The Building Services Coordinator assures the quality of contracted maintenance and repair services through daily inspections and communications with the contractor and occupants of the buildings. An incumbent inspects the work of department custodians at the direction of the Facilities Supervisor. Duties are performed under the general supervision of the Facilities Supervisor . This work includes performing minor maintenance tasks in an assigned building or building area. The tasks include but are not limited to cleaning and waxing hard surface floors, spot treating and cleaning carpets, climbing ladders to replace light bulbs, and moving furniture, records, and other items as needed by staff. Daily tasks will also include distributing parking passes, name tags, desk, and door keys, and creating access badges for Alexandria Police Department Headquarters.

Incumbents must be self-motivated and have the initiative to complete tasks on their own with little supervision. Experience in commercial/industrial cleaning and the ability to drive larger work vehicles are preferred.

What You Should Bring

The ideal candidate should have three or more years of experience in industrial/commercial cleaning and possess knowledge of cleaning methods. You should be able to use a variety of floor maintenance equipment. The candidate will be able to drive and operate several different vehicles including snow blowers and be available for call back during emergencies. In addition, you should be able to move furniture, supplies and other items weighing up to 50 pounds (with assistance). You should also lead by example, demonstrate a commitment to excellence, deliver courteous customer service, and be available to work late evenings, mornings, and/or weekends and holidays when needed.

The Opportunity - Examples of Work

Illustrative example of the Building Services Coordinator responsibilities includes but are not limited to the following:
Helps move office and building furniture and equipment, and prepares rooms for meetings;
Supervises the periodic checks of lighting and plumbing and supervises repairsPerforms minor maintenance and repairs; Reports more difficult and major repairs;Takes corrective action on any performance failure by contractual servicesAssures that equipment is maintained in good working orderResponds to housekeeping complaints by occupantsLoads and unloads large shipments of supplies Conducts daily inspections of cleaning services Coordinates use of conference rooms by scheduling use and setting up with special equipment such as projectors, video recorders, flip charts, and by making seating arrangements Oversees contracted maintenance and repair services Administers and maintains the Department’s furnishings inventory Performs related work as required.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Considerable building custodial or property management experience, including some supervisory experience and public contact; and completion of a high school level course of studies and additional training in custodial or building maintenance services; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Employees must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state of their residence.

Preferred Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED, a minimum of three (3) years’ experience in commercial/industrial janitorial or property management experience, including some supervisory experience and public contact, knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment; ability to exercise care in the use of cleaning materials for different types of surfaces; ability to follow simple oral and written instructions; ability to operate powered automatic scrubbers and sweepers as required; ability to work safely without hazard to self and/or others; and sufficient physical strength to withstand the strain of working long hours in performing manual labor. Able to perform floor maintenance and carpet cleaning, including some minor maintenance experience.

Must be able to work flexible hours (Morning, Evenings) and be available on weekends and holidays, prior experience working within a law enforcement environment. The ability to speak and understand English in a manner that is sufficient for effective communication with supervisors and employees. Must be able to drive larger utility vehicles. and completion of a high school level course of studies and additional training in custodial or building maintenance services; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Have knowledge of operating electronic access control systems; Able to be trained to Administer the telephone/voicemail system; Strong knowledge of Outlook, Word, Teams, and Excel. Knowledge of Kronos.
