Serve as the Operations Supervisor in Interpretation responsible for all visitor services provided in park buildings/areas open to the visiting public.
Provides guidance and direction for a team of five-six frontline Supervisory Park Rangers.
Carries out the full scope of supervisory and personnel management responsibilities, including the recruitment, training, counseling, and evaluation of Supervisory Park Ranger staff. Advises Supervisory Park Ranger team in full scope of their responsibilities.
Provides guidance on Audience Centered engagement and the development of inclusive and equitable programming.
Formulate and execute long- and short-range plans for interpretive activities.
Assists the Division Chief, Deputy Division Chief, and Supervisory Interpretive Specialist in developing projects and annual goals and in achieving those goals.
Evaluate the effectiveness of interpretive programming and operational activities.
Work with supervisors to help staff develop innovative and audience centered programming, revise outlines, develop social media posts and other activities to engage with visitors and community members.
Provide input into and review the design of exhibits, waysides, publications, social media, and audiovisual programs.
Evaluate ideas presented by others, both NPS and non-NPS, and make recommendations on their appropriateness and/or feasibility of implementation.
Responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, evaluating, and providing overall leadership for a staff of 5-6 front line supervisors and up to 70 permanent interpreters, 20 seasonal and term interpreters and interns and Volunteers-in-Park.
In partnership with the Deputy Chief plan for and manage strategic hiring of permanent interpreters and seasonal staff using multiple hiring authorities, ensuring a diverse and inclusive work group.
Ensure equal opportunity in the selection of employees for training, promotions, awards and recognition, and other career development opportunities.
Complete performance appraisals on the Supervisory Park Rangers and serve as reviewing official on 70 permanent Rangers and Guides and various numbers of seasonal guide appraisals, ensuring a consistent approach.
Coach Supervisory Park Rangers to appropriately navigate employee conduct/performance deficiencies and take appropriate actions.
Listens to and resolves complaints from employees. Seeks counsel on more serious complaints.
Responsible for negotiating, understanding, and implementing management's responsibilities in labor management relations including solving grievances at the lowest possible level.
Creates culture of teamwork and inclusion.

Physical Demands: Most duties require extended periods of desk work necessitating talking, reading, writing, and using computer equipment. There are flights of stairs to be negotiated and at times, extended periods of standing or walking may be required. The work requires sound judgement, emotional stability, and sound decision-making ability sometimes under highly stressful situations.

Working Conditions: Most work is performed indoors in climate-controlled buildings however, some outdoor activity may be required from time-to-time and include travel to partner sites, historical sites in the park and nearby, with moderate risks of discomfort in hot, cold, windy, and inclement weather. Most work is performed during normal office hours except during periods of heavy visitation, emergencies, or duty during special events when unusual hours, overtime, or night.

Telework: The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
