This position is focused on the stewardship of natural and cultural resources.

Key Responsibilities

Park Ranger (Protection) Core Responsibilities :

  • Uphold federal regulations, guidelines, and policies.
  • Conduct patrols of both developed and undeveloped areas.
  • Respond to emergencies, including medical situations, search and rescue operations, and fire suppression efforts.
  • Promote visitor engagement and education; manage wilderness areas; enforce boundaries; safeguard natural and cultural assets (including wildlife, flora, archaeological sites, and historic structures). Actively work to prevent resource degradation.
  • Assist in initial investigations of criminal activities, violations of park regulations, public safety issues, and vehicular incidents.
  • Manage crowd control during events.
  • Actively work to prevent resource degradation.
Additional Responsibilities for GS-7 Level: Independently carry out investigations into misdemeanor infractions. Under the guidance of a Type I commissioned officer, investigate felony offenses and fatalities.

  • Passing the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB) is necessary before the start date.
  • A pre-employment medical examination and drug screening are mandatory.
  • Occupancy of government housing may be required.
  • Government housing availability is not guaranteed; contact specific parks for details.
  • Compliance with National Park Service uniform standards is required, and a uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Availability for on-call duties, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime, may be necessary.
  • Operation of a government or private vehicle may be part of the job duties, requiring a valid State-issued driver's license.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement unless otherwise specified.

Credit will be granted for all relevant experience. To receive credit, your resume must clearly outline the nature of your duties and responsibilities for each position, including start and end dates, and total hours worked.

1. Mandatory Requirements for Park Ranger (Protection) :

A. Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least 21 years old.

B. Law Enforcement Commission: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria by the entrance-on-duty date:

Currently hold or have held a National Park Service Seasonal (Level II) or full (Level I) law enforcement commission within the last three years. Successfully completed a Seasonal Law Enforcement Training Program within the last three years.

C. Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB): Applicants must pass the PEB prior to entering law enforcement roles. The duties require significant physical exertion, including walking, running, lifting, and exposure to various weather conditions.

2. Selective Placement Factors:

Note: All applications will be reviewed for Park Ranger (Protection) without EMT or Emergency Medical Responder certifications. However, EMT or FR/EMR certifications are additional qualifications that may be considered.

To be referred for the EMT or EMR/FR designation, applicants must meet the following criteria:

For Emergency Medical Technician designation - Certification by the National Registry or a State EMS organization is required. For Emergency Medical Responder designation - Certification by the National Registry or a State EMS organization is required.

3. Specialized Experience and/or Education:

To qualify for this position at the GS-05 level, applicants must possess one of the following:

A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in federal service. Specialized experience includes law enforcement or investigative work, resource management, or emergency services.

A four-year degree with 24 semester hours of related coursework.
-OR-
C.
A combination of experience and education.

To qualify for this position at the GS-07 level, applicants must possess one of the following:

A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in federal service, involving law enforcement duties for the protection and management of resources.

B.
One full academic year of graduate education related to the occupation.
-OR-
C.
A combination of experience and education.

Qualifying experience may be obtained in both private and public sectors.

Education: To qualify based on education, applicants must submit a legible copy of transcripts indicating their name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average. Transcripts do not need to be official, but official transcripts must be provided if selected based on education.
