Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the Operations Supervisor for Interpretation, overseeing all visitor services in park facilities accessible to the public.

  • Guide the development of Audience-Centered engagement and the creation of inclusive and equitable programming.
  • Develop and implement both long-term and short-term plans for interpretive activities.
  • Assist the Division Chief, Deputy Division Chief, and Supervisory Interpretive Specialist in project development and the achievement of annual objectives.
  • Assess the effectiveness of interpretive programming and operational activities.
  • Collaborate with supervisors to help staff create innovative, audience-focused programming, revise outlines, and produce social media content to engage visitors and community members.
  • Provide feedback on and review the design of exhibits, waysides, publications, social media, and audiovisual programs.
  • Evaluate proposals from both NPS and non-NPS sources, making recommendations regarding their suitability and feasibility for implementation.
  • Oversee the recruitment, hiring, training, evaluation, and overall leadership of a staff comprising 5-6 frontline supervisors, up to 70 permanent interpreters, 20 seasonal and term interpreters, interns, and Volunteers-in-Park.
  • In collaboration with the Deputy Chief, plan and manage strategic hiring initiatives for permanent interpreters and seasonal staff, ensuring a diverse and inclusive workforce.
  • Guarantee equal opportunity in the selection process for training, promotions, awards, recognition, and other career development opportunities.
  • Conduct performance evaluations for Supervisory Park Rangers and serve as the reviewing official for 70 permanent Rangers and Guides, ensuring a consistent evaluation approach.
  • Coach Supervisory Park Rangers in addressing employee conduct and performance issues, taking appropriate actions as necessary.
  • Address and resolve employee complaints, seeking guidance on more serious matters.
  • Manage labor relations responsibilities, including resolving grievances at the lowest possible level.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork and inclusion.

Physical Demands: The majority of duties require extended periods of desk work involving talking, reading, writing, and using computer equipment. There may be occasions requiring negotiation of flights of stairs and extended periods of standing or walking. The role demands sound judgment, emotional stability, and decision-making capabilities, sometimes under high-stress conditions.

Working Conditions: Most tasks are performed indoors in climate-controlled environments; however, some outdoor activities may be necessary, including travel to partner sites and historical locations within the park and nearby areas, with moderate discomfort risks in varying weather conditions. Regular working hours apply, except during peak visitation periods, emergencies, or special events, which may require unusual hours, overtime, or night shifts.

Telework: The National Park Service has determined that the responsibilities of this position are suitable for telework, and the selected candidate may be permitted to telework with supervisor approval.

  • Time-in-Grade: Individuals currently holding or who have held a General Schedule position under non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service must meet time-in-grade requirements.
  • Incidental Driving: Operation of a government or private motor vehicle may be required as part of official duties. A valid State-issued driver's license is necessary.
  • Uniform: Compliance with National Park Service uniform standards is required, and a uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Probationary Period: New employees or supervisors in the Federal government must complete a one-year probationary period.

Qualifications: All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement unless otherwise stated. Credit will be given for all relevant qualifying experience, including volunteer work. Experience must be documented in the application to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience.

Experience: A minimum of one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in federal service is required. Specialized experience includes managing, planning, developing, and directing interpretive and educational services in a large park setting.

Education: There is no substitution of education for experience at the grade level of this announcement.
