Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the Operations Supervisor for Interpretation, overseeing all visitor services in park facilities accessible to the public.
  • Provide leadership and direction to a team of five to six frontline Supervisory Park Rangers.
  • Manage the full spectrum of supervisory and personnel management duties, including recruitment, training, mentoring, and performance evaluation of Supervisory Park Ranger staff.
  • Guide the Supervisory Park Ranger team in understanding their complete set of responsibilities.
  • Develop and implement both long-term and short-term plans for interpretive initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Division Chief, Deputy Division Chief, and Supervisory Interpretive Specialist to formulate projects and annual objectives, ensuring their successful achievement.
  • Assess the effectiveness of interpretive programming and operational activities.
  • Work alongside supervisors to foster innovative, audience-focused programming, including revising outlines and creating engaging social media content.
  • Contribute to and review the design of exhibits, publications, social media, and audiovisual materials.
  • Evaluate proposals from various sources, both within and outside the NPS, providing recommendations on their feasibility and appropriateness.
  • Oversee the recruitment, hiring, training, and evaluation of a diverse staff comprising 5-6 frontline supervisors, up to 70 permanent interpreters, and additional seasonal and term interpreters and interns.
  • In partnership with the Deputy Chief, strategize and manage the hiring of permanent interpreters and seasonal staff, promoting a diverse and inclusive workforce.
  • Ensure equitable opportunities in employee selection for training, promotions, awards, and career development.
  • Conduct performance evaluations for Supervisory Park Rangers and serve as the reviewing official for 70 permanent Rangers and Guides, ensuring a consistent evaluation approach.
  • Coach Supervisory Park Rangers in effectively addressing employee conduct and performance issues.
  • Address and resolve employee complaints, seeking guidance on more serious matters.
  • Manage labor relations responsibilities, including resolving grievances at the lowest possible level.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork and inclusivity.

Physical Demands: This role requires extended periods of desk work, involving talking, reading, writing, and using computer equipment. The position may also involve negotiating flights of stairs and extended periods of standing or walking. Sound judgment, emotional stability, and decision-making abilities are essential, especially in high-pressure situations.

Working Conditions: Most duties are performed indoors in climate-controlled environments, although some outdoor activities may be necessary, including travel to partner sites and historical locations within the park. The role may involve exposure to varying weather conditions. Regular office hours are expected, with potential for unusual hours during peak visitation periods or special events.

Telework: The National Park Service has determined that this position is suitable for telework, subject to supervisor approval.

  • Time-in-Grade: Applicants must meet time-in-grade requirements as outlined in federal regulations.
  • Incidental Driving: Operation of a government or private motor vehicle may be required, necessitating a valid State-issued driver's license.
  • Uniform: Compliance with National Park Service uniform standards is required, with a uniform allowance provided.
  • Probationary Period: New employees or supervisors in the Federal government must complete a one-year probationary period.

Qualifications: All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement unless otherwise stated. Relevant experience will be credited, including volunteer work.

Experience: A minimum of one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in federal service is required. Specialized experience encompasses managing, planning, and directing interpretive and educational services, including visitor center operations and community outreach programs.

Education: No substitution of education for experience is permitted at this grade level.
